I can't tell you why, but my '78 L82 ran stronger after I replaced the original intake with a Performer.
All I can guess is the Performer likely benefits from modern computer design runners. Factory stuff tends to be designed with compromises for emissions, cost, etc. Aftermarrket suppliers like Edelbrock build for the higher performance end and not the corporate accountant.

I just replaced my factory L-82 intake with a Performer with no EGR. Everything else is the same, and I haven't noticed a big difference. That being said, I marked the distributor when I pulled it, but am not sure it's not turned back slightly, I don't own a timing light to verify.

Comments on the 2101 on the forum sounded like different manifolds were being discussed- i.e. more than 1 2101.
I commented on this privately to another knowledgeable hotrodder forum member a long time ago.
The reason for so many different comments on the Performer 2101 is evidently there are 3 versions.
Early or 1st 2101 & Action+ & later stock intakes are similar in appearance regarding runner shape. To give some ex., good for about +10 over stock iron non egr. intake. May not be noticeable improvement over later al. intake.
A significant improvement was made on the 2nd 2101 Performer & Chevy's bow tie intake which Chevy said was as good as the high rise.
This shows the 2nd 2101 Performer (Chevy's bow tie intake is similar w/ Chevy logo in same place as Edelbrock logo) compared to the Victor Jr.

Notice the change in runner shape. To give some ex., good for about +20 over stock iron non egr. intake. There are racing classes that allow only the current 2101- previous 2101 is illegal.
3rd 2101. Edelbrock tech. on current 2101 "our current generation produces more street friendly low end torque."
EPS is better than current 2101. Edelbrock tech. on the EPS, the 2nd Performer 2101 has the advantage.

You might want to look for an L-82 aluminum intake. They are cheap and look stock too. They will perform better than the iron L-48 intake. Everything bolts up.
The Performer intake I ran for many years was marginaly better than the old iron L-48 piece I took off. The Holley 300-36 LT-1 copy was DEFINATELY better than the Performer at the top end and felt the same on the bottom end using my SOTP dyno. Just need to check if it will fit before closing the hood.
-Mark.

Intake question
I have a 76 corvette that I recently purchased. It seems to be unmolested. I think all the numbers match. All of the ones that I have checked so far do with the exception of the intake, air cleaner and valve covers.. Anyway, it has a performer intake and valve covers. I wanted to put it all back to the original appearance. Air cleaner, valve covers, and ignition shielding. My question is will the factory air cleaner fit under the hood with the performer intake? I want to know before I purchase all of these items. Thanks.
