Bottom right hand corner.

At least you have a purple wire. I have: Battery cable, red wire on battery stud, black wire on battery stud, red wire on "S" stud and no yellow wire.

edit for picture add....1970 harness

I'm gonna kick Bubba's azz.

Hey, where'd you get that cool chart??? Looks like it would really help figuring out connections!

Doc Rebuild...I think it was $12 or so. That chart has the front harness, rear harness, engine(ignition), A/C, power window, TI ignition, alarm and every other diagram except the dash harness. The charts are good because they are printed in the order you make the connections if you were to start at the main connector. Just follow it counter clockwise!!

Its very helpful.

Easy. I'm doing mine today. It'll be done in a few hours.

What are the odds of that.
How are you getting to the block on the firewall? I've got side mount headers so maybe that's the problem. It would be great if you could post some before, during and after pics.

ok guys its my turn now......i have 69 with 79 vette engine and an HEI set up.....and it had no engine or drive train when i got it...

so the purple wire is the power source to engage the starter?

i looked at my harness on the fire wall and there is a female spade connector attached to a wire so i'm guessing this is bubbas HEI hook up...

i will have to look for the neutral safety switch (NSS) set up since currently the trans shifter is sitting on the floor and has the NSS wires snipped

have to love bubbas liberal use of electrical tape

Actually I'm just about done. I only need to make a Home Depot run for a few misc. nuts to fix Bubbas home style electrical work. I'm also adding all the factory braces and shielding to the starter so that adds a little time because it was never there. I'll take some pics....mostly after pics. Seriously, this is so easy a cave....

The colored diagram I posted is very helpful. It shows me where all the wires Bubba cut go. In my case some of the new wires, TCS for example, I dont need to hook up. If you have the AIM diagrams it shows where to route it in the clips.

The purple wire is for the "S" terminal (on the engine block side of the starter). It is only hot when the key is in "start" position.

Descriptions precede the pics.....

Disconnect battery:

Place car on jackstands:

Beginning at starter disconnect harness:

Work your way across the firewall disconnecting harness and labeling as you go. Its very helpfull to disconnect vacuum lines as they are installed after and therefore on top of the harness....

Lastly disconnect harness from firewall connector with a 7/16"?? (I used an 11mm) socket and swivel. Those with sidemount headers may be F'd.

I removed mine by feeding it down and pulling it out from under the car.

Installing is almost as easy as removing. I feed it across the firewall first then connected it to the firewall plug and the starter. Doing it this way you have both ends connected. Now its a matter of moving it left to right to achieve the position.

The wiper motor connection is key. Too far to the left or right and neither connector will reach:

There are a variety of clips to hold the harness. Slight shifting of the harness will provide optimal placement. For instance, moving the harness a small amount pulls it away from the exhaust manifold and tight up against the firewall.

Before adjusting:

After adjusting:

Pictures from the AIM (assembly instruction manual) show the exact clips and placement of the branches in relation to the clips...

Replacing the battery cables in many times more difficult than this. I started on the cables yesterday and I'm not dont yet.

good luck,
Jim

Man thanks for posting the steps. That doesn't seem nearly as scary as I thought. Does the bulk connector just snap in? Was it hard to take out the original one?
Thanks!!!!!

Removing the pld is easy. If you want to do it in 5 minutes just cut it out. Or, you can take 20 and actually label and disconnect everything.

The bulk connector has an integrated bolt. As you loosen the bolt the connector pulls away from the firewall. You may have to loosen the bolt a little then pull the harness away from the firewall then loosen the bolt a little more. The front harness slids off to the side.

The after carnage. Front and engine harness....

Thanks for the heads up on that color wiring chart. I'm converting mine from auto w/AC to stick without AC and that color chart will be priceless!!!

Yes that is correct, purple wire energizes solenoid. The HEI will need a switched 12v supply, I doubt any of those wires are for the HEI.

Wow, love that HP clutch cooler.

That really is good news. Thanks again for the helpful hints. Where did you buy yours? I need to do both as well.

I bought Lectric Limited harnesses through Paragon. If you place a $500 order with Paragon you qualify for some type of discount. Its actualy cheaper to buy them through Paragon versus direct from Lectric.

You should buy all of your harnesses from the same vendor to ensure compatibilty. There's something about mix-n-matchin' harnesses that doesnt go over to well with me.

Good luck,
Jim

Default NSS on a 77

Where is the NSS on a 77 automatic? I seem to sometimes have no power when I turn the ignition switch. I replaced the starter 2 weeks ago and I put on a MR Gasket starter heat cover as my Y pipe heat was heating the starter. (it was) I want to make sure that I have total continuity there.

Thanks
Jack
