What are good donor cars for the 700R4 transmission?
I have been thinking about this for a while and I would like to get a bit more information. If I choose to do things the hard way, which vehicles would I need to look at for a transmission? It would be going into a '73, and I think I would be best off with a cable drive for the speedo, and a non-lock-up torque converter. Who has the info? Thanks for your time.

88-92, I believe all are cable driven speedometers, but not totally sure. Anything for a non-Corvette, 2WD application (Camaro, 2WD pickup, Firebird, etc). 4WD has a transfer case on it, I think. Not sure how the 4WD ones work, someone else may know.
88-92 is referred to 4L60, 700R4 is the weaker variant from 82-87. BTW, Bow Tie Overdrives sells a 4L60 transmission with some sizable upgrades from stock, for about $800.

I got one for a project I'm working on out of a 92 Camaro. I got it from a local tranny speed shop and had the electrics removed and a manual kickdown installed, completely rebuilt the tranny, and a 2200 stall converter, flexplate cover, and yoke for just over $1000.

Mine came from a '92 Chevy truck. It had an electronic speedo sending unit in it but it was easily interchangable with a gear/cable driven setup ($44 from Bowtie Overdrives).
I used Bowtie Overdrives universal TV cable setup to use my Quadrajet carburetor.
I had a transmission shop set mine up to lock up the torque converter based on line pressure instead of an electronic signal.
We modified the existing cross member to fit the 700R4.

There in everything. Bonnevilles, Trucks, V-8 f-bodies, you name it. When looking for a core look for a rainbow casting mark over the fluid cooling lines. That's your baby. Also if you are looking for a late model 88 and up, the first digit of the serial # is the year (9MN64937NY) 9 = 89 year. The speedo is not an issue, it changes out easily.
I stopped by my local tranny shop today and they quoted $200.00 to rebuild with my kit. That's the works, hot tank, etc. My kit is a borg warner and it was $120 complete. I think thats not to bad of a deal.
So total expenses are as followed:
$50 core
$120 kit
$200 rebuild
$160 cross member
$30-60 to cut drive shaft
$20 dip stick
$45 Lokar TV cable
$125 convertor
$30 trans cooler (optional)
-------------
est $810. not including beer for installation
Not to bad for a kick butt first gear and OVERDRIVE.
Disclaimer: I do not need the wiring harness since I already have a computer. Also the shift indicator is optional.

i used bowtie od for my source, but i recall that 88-92 700r4 are the ones to look for. i would NOT choose to go with a non-lock up 700r4,the lock-up eliminates slippage, which is friction = heat. and that addl heat will kill a 700r4.in my set-up i "test" the lock-up once in awhile,by getting up to speed in 4th gear,up a hill, and just tap my brake pedal, which stops lock-up and the tach jumps 200-300 rpm. as soon as i let off the brake lock-up occurs and the tach drops back down.i would contact bowtie od,steve holmes, and "glean" as much info as i could, even if you don't plan on using their product. i spent about $1500 on my conversion, about $150 of that was shipping, the rest was the tranny, torque converter, adapter plate, new trans lines, brake relay, shifter conversion kit, misc. stuff.

Don't know about cable drive or not, but my '87 has the 700R4 trans in it. It might be electronic since it's got the digi dash though.

Any '88 and up Caprice taxi or cop car had a better 700r4 than average. We had a bunch in our fleet with LT-1's and never broke one, and nobody is rougher on a car than a cop, god bless 'em :smash:

Go with a 700 out of a Caprice. There are mount holes on the tailshaft cover. This makes it easier to install into a C3. The Camaro 700's mount is located in front of the tailshaft cover. '82 vette 700's has a similar tailshaft as a Caprice.
