Default Jeep steering box ujoint

I am going to put a jeep steering box in my 1968. I don't if anyone has posted this, but Borgeson has a ujoint that will fit with no modifications. It is a 8DDx148. The 8DD stands for 18 mm Double D shaft (.730 x .610) and 148 stands for 1 in. shaft, 48 spline I just got the ujoint and checked it on the jeep box. I haven't checked in on the column since it is still hooked up. Borgeson can be reached at 860-482-8283. Hope this helps other people out.

Just curios, why a box from a jeep?

As I remember it most jeep (75 thur 80 something) steering shafts will fit most GM boxes and columns.

The jeep shaft, with a built in U joints, makes for handy project car steering column swaps.

It's a late model Cherokee box - basically the latest and greatest version of the steering box used on many vehicles, including C2s and C3s.

Ok. I used a Trans Am gearbox on my Jeep once cause it had less turns lock to lock. So I was having fun trying to figure why you might want more turns lock to lock.

The C2/C3 Corvette has a unique gear design. The manual gear that is designed for those Vettes only fits the C2/C3 and no other vehicle. The typical GM/Saginaw (passenger car/light truck) model 700 integral power steering gear is not even close to fitting into a Vette.

However, the modern design fast ratio Saginaw model 600 power gear that was designed ONLY for the 1999 - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a somewhat close fit to the C2/C3. Of all the integral power gears, this gear is the only one with a decent chance of working. (Even this gear requires modifications to the frame and/or adapter plates to make it fit.)

Lastly, don't forget that the Grand Cherokee and the Jeep Cherokee are completely different vehicles. Don't even think that a Cherokee (any model or year) or Grand Cherokee gears (before 1999) will work. Also note that the Grand Cherokee changed to rack & pinion in 2005.

Looking at the jeep grand cherokee gear box mod......has anyone figured a way around welding the stock pittman arm yet?

I noticed past threads someone said that corvette steering can remachine the spline on the stock corvette pittman arm.

Another guy said that you can get one out of a mid-seventies caddillac or oldsmobile......something to that effect

Any tips or suggestions?? How about "brackets" to bolt the jeep box to the frame? I seen the past threads just curious if anyone has come up with something different?

Thanks

There is an old GM pitman arm from a 74 Chevelle GM #7814221 that fits with no modifications required. I got an NOS part from a Chevelle specialist in Minneapolis MN last year. Fits perfect! What you are looking for is an arm 5 1/2 inches center to center and 3/4 inch offset.

I had to ream the small end of the A-body Pitman to fit the manual relay rod stud, but the shape is right and it it fits the Jeep Box output perfectly. A guy on eBay has the reamers for about $60, or a chassis shop that does race work should have it.

Thanks! I just ordered one

Another question....has anyone tried that U-Joint specified above? If not what did you use that worked? What about the rag joint?

My Chevelle pitman arm fit perfect with no reaming needed. I did have to clean up the splines on the jeep box with a small file to get some rust and crud out to get it to seat all the way. But it really was easy.

I have the Borgenson number at home but won't be there until Sunday afternoon. I had to do a little grinding on the steering shaft to get it to fit, not a big deal and it sure is nicer than a rag joint.

Thanks!

I have a salvage yard down the road from me that has a couple of 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee boxes for $100....may go get that this afternoon after work.

On a side note: I noticed a couple of members made brackets, some welded a plate into the frame.......why could you get some 3/8 steel plate and long grade 8 bolts and go straight through the fram using two steel plates with four holes drilled on each side for strength?

I made my own plates similar to the CorvetteSteering.com unit. I did not want to modify the frame as it was a perfect original and if I ever want to go back to everything as stock I wanted that choice.

Question for all you guys who've/who're put 99-04 JeepGC box in a C3 that ALREADY HAD P/S ... vette already had power steering, P/S control valve & P/S Ram ... question: ....

.... what did you do with P/S control valve? ... if anything?
What does your new pitman arm's tapered hole attach to??
Have you converted center link to Manual-steer type?

I bought a manual steering link on EBAY as it looks better, but I know you can convert a power steering rod. Search the forum and you should be able to find what others have done. The pitman arm connects right up to a the joint that is used on the manual shaft.
