What gauge is the alternator hot wire?

What gauge is the alternator hot wire?
I have to lengthen the hot wire from the battery to my alternator, and I'm trying to figure out which gauge it is. I bought a small length of 6 and 8 gauge with the 8 looking more like the right size. There is nothing legible on the original wire to identify it. Thanks as always for any assistance.
