Default 1968 Engine redline?

For 1968 model year, Corvette produced the following bib block engines:

L36 - 427 V8 390 bhp @ 5400 rpm, 460 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm; 3x2 bbl
L68 - 427 V8 400 bhp @ 5400 rpm, 460 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm; 3x2 bbl
L71 - 427 V8 435 bhp @ 5800 rpm, 460 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm; 3x2 bbl
L88 - 427 V8 430 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 460 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm; 1x4 bbl

Does anyone know what the tachometer indicated redline was for each of these engines? Any help will be appreciated.

Been seeing your posts on the 68 you are looking at, and hope that you have pictures....

OK, it seems to me that you are trying to uncover what the original configuration of the car was when built, it has a NOM 396, but may be a big block anyway. The car is 18800, and the body trim tag is May 9, or J 09. This is correct, 18860 is the fisrt J 10 car I have, and 17565 is a J 07. What were the original color codes?

Engine is gone, but transmission is next. Is it 4 speed or Automatic? How many fuel lines run down the passenger framerail? Does the rear end have big block caps? Do the rear end codes stamped into the bottom of the differentail tell you the ratio?

As for tachs.....the only really definitive tach is a L71/L89/L88 tach with a yellow that runs 63-65, then 65-7000 redline. The otehr tach is the 390/400 tach which is the same. I forget the redlines, just know the "shape" of the sb/bb tachs.

Please post info on the color, coupe or convert and the transmission if you can.

The actual # is 18811. The trim is 415 which is blue leather and the paint is 976 (Le Mans Blue). The car is a roadster 4 speed with factory hardtop with factory vinyl covering. I have not gotten to the transmission or differential #'s yet. There is no protect-o-plate and no documentation. I'm considering pulling the tank to get at the built sheet, if it is still there.

Any thoughts ??

Hi

L36 - 427 V8 390 bhp @ 5400 rpm, 460 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm; 3x2 bbl

This is not correct. The 390 HP L36 has a Rochester carb installed.

Only the L68 ( 400 HP ) L71 , L89 ( 435 HP ) where tripowers and the L88 had a Holley.

I am also only sure about the 6500 red line on the L71, L89 & L88.
I think the L36 was 5600 red lined.
