Default Who mkaes The BEST Spark Plug Wire Set?????

Looking at replacing my spark plug wires. Is there much difference between stock spark plug wire sets and all the performance sets. Are they worth the extra dollars. Which manufacturer do you like & WHY?

For prefit I would get AC Delco (Advance, O'Rieleys) or Moroso Blue Max (Summit, Jegs....). I have had good luck with both. I have had no luck with Advance or Auto Zone or any other discount house brand wires. Autolite from Advance is good, but some are orange and just look funny.

I have found the AC Delco, 8mm, HEI wires perform the best for me and are usually very reasonably priced considering the quality. I installed a set on my 1973 about 17 years ago (~20k miles ago) and they're still on there. As long as they don't come in direct contact with an exhaust manifold, I've never had one fail on any of the SB Chevy's I've installed them on.

I always route the wires the way the factory did with all of the shielding on and you can hardly see they are not the original black 7mm's. The shielding protects them from most major sources of heat and the 8mm's are silicone so they hold up very well.

When installing them, I remove the boot from the distributor ends and route them from the plugs to the distributor where I cut them to the exact length and install the standard terminals to fit the non-HEI distributor cap. I've found that most wire sets end up with some excess wire on some of the runs and in this manner I get them to fit perfectly with out having to tuck extra wire under the shielding.

Good luck... GUSTO

All the major ignition companies have quality wires and the custom sets are direct fit. Some of those good brands are Belding, Standard, Borg Warner, Niehoff, and naturally Delco. These wires are generally found at a independant parts store and not necessarily in chain stores as they are higher priced parts but better quality.....

I bought a few cars that came with 8.5mm Accell wires and I like em. Haven't had to buy any in a long time but I'll probably get those when I do.

The Autolites are good too.

I think the moral is, don't buy the cheapest ones you can find, but you don't necessarily need the most expensive either. All the premium wires seem to get good reviews.

MSD red 8.5mm custom fit, with thick grey boots. They're pricy, but they are excellent quality.

AC Delso parts are tough to beat, as are all OEM parts. In any event, stay away from discount unheard of brands.

Best in what category? That is a pretty loose term. To my knowledge there isn't any quantitative evalution that says X is better than Y for the following performance factors.

I chose the AC Delco 508N (don't trust me on those numbers) because they look most like the originals and they perform extremely well. They fit the original looms and brackets and give a great stock look.

If you want yellow, orange, glow in the dark or other types, then read the advice given by others. I suspect that ANY name brand will do just fine.

I seem to be afflicted with a dominant red-neck gene. Therefore I will be using the yellow, 8mm Accel wires with red boots.

I have the Accel Armor Shield wires, they have a wire braid on the exterior that looks good and protects them. I have been running them on my truck for over 5 years now with no problems. Just bought a set for the vette. About 50 bucks

I use Moroso 8mm blue max and buy the universal set so I can taylor each length to the application. Works great but you'll need a good crimping plier for the ends.

I have the MSD 8.5 MM custom fit wires on mine. They are loomed along the bottom rail of the vavle covers and I love them. They are expensive though.

Default Wires

My car has had Taylor wires for many years with no problems. On the other hand when I got the car I put in a set of Accel wires. They were a disaster. I had a miss at about 4000 RPM that I could not trace for sometime. One night I had just pulled into the garage and popped the hood while the car was still running. The lights were off in the garage. I was able to instatntly find the miss. Several of the wires had a blue arc running beside them. #8 plug was firing intermittently. #8 was the source of the miss. It was a good light show. I had assumed that since the wires were very new that they could not be the source of the miss. Well I was wrong. Nevre seen anything like it. I figure Corvette engine heat had destroyed the Accel wires insulation. Needless to say I'm not fond of Accel wires.
