C3 1978 Corvette brake fluid capacity
I am replacing the entire brake system on a 1978 Corevette. I am replacing master cylinder, hoses, brake lines, calipers and brake pads.
I am considering using DOT 5 instead of Dot 4/Dot 3.
Is DOT 5 a good idea?
How much DOT 5 does the entire brake system need?
Thank You

That's a tough call because you may find yourself bleeding several times to minimize the natural affinity of Dot5 to oxygen. You must bleed slowly. I used drip bleed to successfully bleed the brakes and it remains rock solid since 02. With DOT 5 you can't agitate the fluid otherwise it attracts oxygen. In contrast DOT 3, has a natural affinity for moisture...and therefore the pitting.
Corvette Enthusiast had an excellent article about DOT5 a couple of issues ago. I can scan and post if you can't get a copy. Also search the archives...the forum has had several threads on the topic.

First - Thanks for the reply.
I have purchase 72 oz of Dot 5 fluid. I am hoping that will cover the initial fill and the bleeding process.
Very good suggestion on the SS sleeves.
I would very interested in seeing the Corvette Enthusiast story about the DOT 5
Thanks Rick
