454 to 572 or 540 stroker kit
Hi guys,
I got a very good deal on a 454 block off a 1969 Chevelle. I am looking to rebuilt it with a 572 stroker kit off ebay. Does anyone know of the quality of this kit? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Scat-...mZ120166461547
This is the 540 kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BUDGE...mZ250287094267
I did a search but I could not find any information on these kits in the archives.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Gio

Something is a bit fishy here. I was looking at a rotating kit to build a 540 and everything I looked at that was 100% FORGED 4340 steel was way more than that fleabay price. I decided to build a 496 because the price difference between the 540 and the 496 was close to $1000. 44 cubic inches won't make that much difference IMHO. The best price I found was CNC-Motorsports- they had the 496 kit for just under $2k. All Scat forged 4340 with ARP bolts and froged pistons.

Good components cost good money. HP is not cheap. Don't buy the cheapest kit out there. Look for quality parts.
I think the 572 will require a tall deck block also. 540 is really pushing the limits of the block. The 496 can be built to provide plenty of HP and the cost is going to be less.

That 572 kit looks to be a Scat kit, as the price also indicates, but that 540 kit! I'd put that in an engine I was building for someone that I was trying to **** off. Do you really want junk flying around at 6000 rpm? (maybe literally) 496s & 502s are real popular, but if you have to have bigger then you need to start with a Motown or Dart block.

Can't make a 572 out of a 454. 572 requires 4.5" bore which is the 502 block. 454 blocks are 4.25" bore.
Also think you need a tall deck for 572?
A 454 block can be made a 496 with a 4.25" stroke crank.
Considering the heavy rotating mass of a big-block I would stay away from cheap cranks & rods. But that's just me...

First....'69 Chevelle's didn't have 454's....but that's really irrelevant here. You have a 454 block.
The 572's require the 10.200 tall *truck* type blocks. Your's is 9.8" tall on decks. You can make a 505 if you punch it .100 and use a 4.250 crank. Some go to .125 over...but it's asking for trouble.
The 496 is a .060 over block and a 4.250 crank. They make great engines.
The first kit is SCAT stuff and generally it's pretty decent. It has a Forged crank, H-beam rods and JE pistons....all good stuff. You might check and see what they have for a 496 for a good price.
The second kit is put together with a bunch of junk...most likely CAT brand. Stay away from it...you're asking for trouble.
You might check the Callies Compstar line for some good stuff. It's imported too...just like all the rest.....but machining is much nicer than most.
