Any head work done to those stock heads? I see it has headers on it. That will definitly help also.

[.
Just shows you oval port engines with a Rochester 4 bore done correctly can produce respectful horse power

Guess there won't be much concern about bolting on the alt., PS and even AC and dragging it down to mere mortal performance.

...the heads just had a valve job basically...no porting or polishing was done

it is my understanding that this dyno puts a "load" on the engine when a pull is done to mimmick a real world situation? i will also have the car dyno'd when it is put together to see what a difference there is...

jaws dropped when this bad boy cranked out 428 hp because everyone - including the guy that built the motor - told me to not expect much for than 350 hp...

cant help that the dyno guy uses headers and i will have the original exhaust manifolds and mufflers....

what im trying to show here is that is that 50% more power can be added to these engines without changing the carb, intake manifold (hood clearance) or original heads -
this engine was rated from the factory at 270 hp

It is my understanding that "the factory" grossly under rated horsepower and torque numbers, especially during the end of the muscle car era. I was told this was done to pacify insurance agencies of the day. Quite honestly, those numbers are impressive, but not totally unexpected. You will likely see a 50+/- horsepower drop once it is on a chassis dyno due to inefficeincies in the drivetrain and rotating mass. Just the same, you have yourself a very strong big block there. Nice work!

Great job with the motor! You have confirmed what I have suspected about my 78 L-82 for a long time that many of the stock mid to late 70's motors are capable of much more horsepower with minor mods on the stock motor. My motor internally is totally stock but I have zero pollution control, No cat, No EGR, AIR pump and hardware, 2.5 true duals with Monza Turbo mufflers, McJacks Shorty headers, and roller rockers. I am astonished about how much more horsepower it makes in this configuration. Many vette owners underestimate the power potential of these engines even with "smog" heads. I bet with a valve job and roller cam on a L-82 engine with no pollution control and super efficient exhaust system could easily make 125 horsepower over the stock rating. By the way, you may want to check out McJacks Shorty headers that are an exact duplicate dimensionally of the stcok exhaust manifold in header form with zero clearance issues and the use of the stock exhaust, if you prefer.

Hydraulic roller gave you about 75 hp. and a substantial increase throughout the RPM range. Probably the best upgrade you could make to the stock engine.

appreciate all the kind words!

i hope everyone understands that i am not boasting about my engines performance as compared to any other engine out there...im sure there are many 454's out there that can eat mine for lunch....

the point im trying to make is that - if you have a car that you want to leave basically stock (and stock looking) - there are really some neat gains to be had with some relatively easy internal engine mods...

i have no idea where the horsepower was on the car originally - all i can go by is the factory rating (270 hp) and i do realize that was a net number....

to have this engine perform like it does was a complete and total surprise to everyone involved with it (especially the engine builder himself) - and i thought id post to share some insight ive had with this particular engine...

Do you have any idea what you are talking about? Just kidding, congratualtions on finally getting that bad boy running and tuned, can't wait to see it in that chassis with that beautiful paint job. Going to be one of the cleanest looking vettes out there.

Which cam? And, if I may, can describe the rpm/torque curve? And hp/rpm curve? I just might need this cam in my 68 427...

As a guy who likes them basically stock (looking) I think what you have done is so . Like a lot of other guys here, I'm looking forward to seeing the car when completed. Yeah, I know, they are never really complete, but you know, up and running....

yeah...we have to replace the thick needles that holley rebuilt the quadrajet with...skinnier needles will do the trick...this is really a show car...do i dont know how many 6000 rpm shifts i will be doing...but its nice to know that all that money i spent went to good use
