L48 vs. L82 main differences
What are the main differences between L48 and L82 in 1980? Are they 2 or 4-bolt mains? Is an L48 worth rebuilding to beef up the horsepower to around 350?

There are a ton of home built 350 horse L48s running around. Heads and cam will get you there. The original '69 350 horse 350 used rams horn exhaust manifolds and a q-jet on top of the same iron intake you got on an Impala station wagon. Prolly not the best internals, but if you don't run above 5,000 rpm for extended periods it will last.

L82 vs L48
The L 82 is basically a leftover LT 1 design, has the steel crank, four bolt mains, does not have the compression ratio and valve train/cam as the LT 1 did, solids vs hydraulic lifters and has the larger 202 valves, stronger hydraulic cam then L 48 and an aluminum intake. The L 48 is the base motor, cast crank, two bolt mains, lower compression ratio, hydraulic lifters as the L 82,milder cam then the L 82,smaller valve 194's and a cast iron intake L 48 has better low end pull then L 82 which comes on a little later.

More comp comes from L82 flattop vs L48 dish pistons.
The other diffs have little or no effect on power. Build the L48 & don't look back.

The L48 350 is good to rebuild for a street engine- make it like the General should have. BTW, the 80 L48 came with the aluminum intake manifold from the L82.
