Default Help: Angle of turn signal lever after repair on a 1979

I had the inoperative turn signal switch as well as excess play in
the turn signal lever repaired by a Chevy dealer.
The angle of the turn signal switch now points up at about a 45
degree angle as compared to pointing back at level angle prior
to the repair.
What causes this difference?

Car has the bent style cruise control turn signal lever and
has a tilt wheel.

These are the parts that were replaced:
Turn signal switch no. 1997988, the original switch no. is 1997983
is this the problem? Yet when I went to NAPA's web site to cross over
to their part no.s, both the GM switches cross to the same Napa no.

Other parts replaced:
Dimer pivot no. 7833283
Turn signal lever no. 25030522
Buzzer switch retainer 7830376

According to my Parts Book, the 1997988 switch is for the standard column (no T/T) and the 1997983 is for the Tilt column.

Duke was on the right track,

Actually the difference is probably the lever they used. The later number for 1979 was a straigt lever the early had a bend in it. I posted earlier the 25030492 was discontinued, I was mistaken, the 25030185 is discontinued

The correct bent turn signal lever was used. Does the turn
signal switch effect the angle in which the turn signal lever is
pointed? The original turn signal switch is discontinued which
is why the other switch was used. I thought this maybe the
reason so that is why I used Napa's cross over system to
see if there are two different switches.
I don't know enough about the way the turn signal lever works
to know if the turn signal switch itself effects the angle of the
lever. I did compare the old and new dimer pivots and the new
one points out further, so this maybe the difference but this
is the correct part no.

Any help would be appreciated.

The switch attaches to the dimmer pivot with a crossover arm. The angle of the turn signal lever hole in the dimmer pivot dictates if you require a bent lever or a straight one. The turn signal lever does not directly connect to the switch after the 1976 model year.

I will try and sort things out later this afternoon. I have to leave right now.

I checked the turn signal lever part numbers versus the GMPartsDirect websight. There are several that seem to be available from GM that are in the 1978, 1979, and 1980 model years. I have updated my Tilt & Telescoping Disassembly & Repair Paper #3 to include the GM part numbers that I found. I will be downloading the updated paper to the www.corvettefaq.com websight tomorrow.

The following is taken directly from page #3 of Paper #3.
----------------------
The 78 to 79 - The turn signal lever w/cruise (GM 25030522, ZIP SC-337 or Doc Rebuild #2897116) had a 30 degree bend in it because the dimmer pivot had the lever mounting hole that was at a shallow angle (21 degrees) and the lever needs to bend toward the steering wheel rim such that the driver can easily reach the cruise button.

The 78-82 T&T turn signal lever w/o cruise was GM 14009242, ZIP SC-333 or Doc Rebuild #2897118. It was a straight lever.

The next change occurred late in the 1979 model year. The angle of the turn signal lever mounting hole in the dimmer pivot was changed to 46 degrees. The turn signal lever now was pointed more directly at the steering wheel and the turn signal lever was straight. Zip Products lists a 79L-82 Turn Signal Arm Pivot Assembly SC-756. This should be the pivot that works with straight turn signal levers.

Here are the T&T levers that I think work with the 46 degree pivot. GM 25030492, Zip Products 79L-80 Turn Signal Lever w/tele & w/o cruise SC-332. 1981-82 Turn Signal Lever w/cruise (Resume Switch on side of lever) Doc Rebuild 289119.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like the problem is the wrong dimmer
pivot was used. What is the correct part no. for the dimmer
pivot to use with the bent turn signal lever no. 25030522?
I have a GM parts catalog from 1981 and it lists dimmer pivot no.
7833283 for 1979-81 with tilt wheel, it does not distinguish
between bent vs. straight levers. This is the one that was installed.

It also lists two different pivot no.'s for 1978 with tilt wheel:
7831296 (1st design with threaded pivot with tapped housing)
7833704 (2nd design with pressed on pivot pin)

Would the 2nd design be the one to use on a 1979 with the bent
lever?

The 7833283 dimmer pivot is for 1979 Late thru 1982 and uses a straight lever rather than the bent one.

I am quite sure that the pivots for T&T columns from different years will all interchange. The different angle on the lever mounting hole dictates whether you need a straight or bent lever.

So unless you are worried about being NCRS correct, just use the correct lever to match the pivot so the cruise button on the end of the lever is near your fingertip on the steering wheel rim.

Maybe I should make a chart on all the levers and pivots used from 1977 through 82.

Typically I have only included GM part numbers when the parts actually show up on the GMPartsDirect websight and therefore were still available to all GM dealers through the GM service system. (I think that GMPartsDirect is accurate as to part availability.) The problem is that GM has been dropping more and more old Corvette parts from the service system. With the "New GM" I am afraid that more and more old parts are going to be dropped in the interest of "streamlining" the system even with the outlandish high prices that they already charge.

I do have accurate parts lists for nearly all of the Corvette C3 steering columns. It is impossible to try and list all of the components that are or are not available through GM service.
