shimming body to frame questions???
i just dropped my 68' coupe body back on to the rolling chasis last night.when i bought this project, the body was already off of the frame, so i have no idea about original shims. what is the best way to determine where and how many shims are needed? is the idea strictly to get the body mated up with the frame, or are you trying to insure that the car sits pretty level when completed? i will also hang the doors to check for fit.
right now, with no shims in place, only the mounts, the car sits low at left front and high at right rear. should i start by placing shims at LH #1 mount to try to even the body up, and then work from there, or what? does anyone have a "recommended procedure" that would be helpful? thanks for any input.....rick

I would get the doors back on first. Look for the wittness marks left by the bolts on the hinges. The purpose is to get the doors back to where they were. Then look at the vertical door gaps. This will tell you where you need to shim.

put 1-2 shims under the 4 inner cabin mounts, to level out,
(you can't access these with body on)
then add 1-2 shims on the front and body mounts as needed,
dictated by the gaps you have,
you want to evenly distribute the load across all 8 body mounting points.

thanks for the input. i guess i need to get the doors back on before i go much further, and then maybe i will just start with two shims on inner mounts and go from there. car doesn't seem to be sitting real level right now. is it possible to correct some of that with shims? rick

The factory service manual has measurements from the frame to the ground at various locations. Check these first to ensure that the suspension is keeping the frame level.
