Collapsing the steering shaft?
I am installing a rack system and have found that if I could
collapse the steering column 1.5'' to 2'' it would better my angle
and relieve the Resistance that I feel every 180 degree turn I make.
If I collapse the shaft will it become lose and slide up and down
freely, because the steering stem that I am using is telescopic
and it moves freely when the bolt is loose so I need the steering
shaft to be rigid after the installation.
Thanks for any help,
Riggs.

Jim Shea will probably reply and give you the info that you need, but if he doesn't reply within a few days try sending him a PM. Jim is THE MAN when it comes to steering column questions.

It is safe to move the steering shaft back into the steering column by a couple inches. The OEM shaft is held in place by injected plastic. The worse that can happen once you break the plastic is that your steering shaft could develop a very minor amount of looseness over time.
For some reason most people find that the steering shaft is usually a lot harder to draw back out of the column than it took to shove it in. So I wouldn't worry about the shaft migrating around.

Another thing you can do is loosen the firewall bolts, and slip the column round a tad to relieve the tightness, no harm....
maybe have to remove, readjust your interlock crap too, but release all that first...

Thanks guys for posting. I guess I will move the shaft back
a little to make the steering stem rotate smoother, I just
wanted to make sure I wasn't shooting my foot off.
Thanks,
Riggs.
