300 HP should be pretty close.....mine (260H cam and chambered pipes, but no headers) desk dynoes at 275......If I go any farther, it'll be heads and headers for me.....your biggest bottleneck now are the stock '76 "smog heads". Welcome to the Forum...theres a wealth of info here...just hang around and You'll see..........

Hey Stinger, welcome to the board. Like you, I'm kinda new around here - I'm still searching for the perfect C3 to buy. I don't have an answer to your post, it's just good to see another British Columbian on the forum  . Take care and good luck.

I'm in the same situation that you are with my '76 L-48 auto. (Factor dog heads, I mean smog heads) When you / if you change them out and find something good, let me know.
From the similarities I would say that you are running about where I'm at,
approx. 260-270.

Welcome and Drive On,
TJ

I have heard the the 1.96 heads help out the torque #'s although at high rpm( where HP comes in to play) they run out of flow.
I t is the same idea as 4 hole or open bore spacer if the opening is smaller the velocity of the fuel/air mix will speed up.

I did a little looking around the engine compartment and I believe they are the stock smog heads. They were painted yellow just as the engine block.... What are an ideal pair of heads for the l48 that would be effective and at a low cost?thanx

Vortec heads are very good, BUT you need a new intake manifold (different bolt pattern) and must convert the carb to electric choke (no crossover). Also, stock Vortecs can only handle about .450 lift (not sure what the 260H is) is if going for a better cam, the heads must be machined for bigger springs. Figure $800 US total and you can get a set of Edelbrock or Trick Flow aluminum's for same price if you shop around.

BTW: Welcome to the forum. How is the skiing this year? I lived on Whidbey for 9 years and am heading back this summer.

The mountains around here are supposed to be really good this winter, but unfortunately I seperated my shoulder in the last football game of the season so i've been missin out, oh well :nopity
-PS- Im sure ill have more questions to ask your guys later, this is a great Forum! I just wish i found out about it sooner! :yesnod:
