Default Advise on Vortec intakes

Hello, i just bought an 81 and am builing a motor for it, i'm planning on using bow-tie vortec small port heads and am looking for intakes, i think i have settled on gm vortec low rise with egr part#12496820 i was wondering if anyone has used this intake and if it will fit under the stock hood of the 81? i will be running a q-jet on this motor, i think it will fit with a drop base air cleaner but can't find any info to verify this. Thanks

I run a performer vortec intake with a Qjet, and my stock aircleaner. It all fits with about 1/2" clearance on a stock '77 hood. You can go to the edelbrock site to get the intake height and compare it to the one you listed to see if the height is similar. A drop base will definitly create more room.

I am using the 12496820 with the q-jet and drop base air cleaner. But you will need to find a 2x14 filter element. The drop base usually comes with a 3 inch and on mine the wing nut would touch the hood when closed. 2 inch will give you 5/8 th clearence with an 81 hood. I have yet to put my 77 hood back on and that will free up some more room. Had to make the window on the distributor cover a little longer so the air cleaner base would fit. Filter by STP SA 3648 Overall hieght 2.5,filter suface height 2.0.

I use the 1/4 inch gasket, It provides some insulation.

shortest vortec intake is professional products p/n 52007 ... it IS for Q-jet ... but is does NOT have egr.

vortec PP 52007 A = 3.60", B = 4.90", AVG = 4.25"
