BB w/ Retro Roller, Cloyes Timing Cover, and Water Pump Clearance
I'm thinking of purchasing this timing cover:

...for a BB build. A bit of research has revealed there could be clearance problems with aftermarket short water pumps and the Cloyes timing cover.
I already have this Stewart aluminum high-flow pump that I plan to use:

Can you confirm if I'll encounter clearance problems?
Thanks!

I ran a Donavan gear drive years ago that was similar in nature. I had to grind down the heads on the backside of the waterpump and a portion of backplate where it is bent up for strength to clear it.

It will work BUT it has to be clearanced only very slightly, and you will never be able to see where it is once assembled. I used this on my engine build earlier this year with a Stewart Hi Flow aluminum WP. I have a build thread on the C3 General forum titled "She's 40 today, getting a heart transplant" that has all of my build documentation in it, check it out.

Ray & Ben,..I'm not that wild about spending $150.00 for a timing cover then having to grind on it to make it fit.
Can you further describe where and how much has to be ground off.
Thanks for your help!

You will likely have to grind it in several places. I had to grind the cover around both water pump bosses to allow the water pump to bolt up. Bolt on timing chain cover. Use a couple of longer 3/8" bolts to hold pump in place and mark off areas to to clearanced with a Sharpie. In addition, the four bolts holding the cam thrust bearing plate to the cover will have to be flattened and/or the back cover of the water pump clearanced (I did a little of both) assuming you are using a short water pump.

The cloyes cover is crap! It is not a true two piece like Comp cams,
The problem with cloyes is the thicker cast aluminum. I machined one off before in the area on the back of the pump of the impellar cover. Or you could get some .080 aluminum and and use the water pump gaskets as the patern fo a spacer.

We used one one Doug's "Bruiser" with the 555" build. I liked it. You might shoot a note to *Snowman* here on the Forum. I used a belt drive on the dyno and then installed the Cloyes after the testing. I wasn't there when they installed the water pump with it...but I don't think there was much drama with it at all.
