Default Issues with my new Timing Light

Hi!

This week I bought a new Timing light, the Equus 5568. First of all, the link is only to show which timing light I mean, I bouht it not at Summit.

Today I wanted to check my timing at my 427ci BB but the showed degrees of the timing gun are not right. If the showed degrees would be right, the motor couldn´t run
My friend has also a timing gun, another brand, and I borrowed his one. With his one, the showed timing degrees are right, and the engine runs verry well.

So do you have any experience with the Equus and can you tell me a trick, that it shows the right degrees? I tried everything and every modus, but it doesn´t work.
Also the rpms, once it shows right and once it shows 9999.

Can I set the Equus that it shows the right advance degrees?

Thanks, Günther

Hi Günter,

in my eyes there's not much to do wrong with the 5568. The inductive pickup has an arrow on it which should point towards the spark plug - make sure you have it properly connected.
If that does not solve the issue I would return it and get another 5568 which works.

Are you sure you're using spark plug #1?

Hi Carsten!

Thanks for your reply! Yes I think I will send it back to the vendor if nobody has a trick for me, how I can adjust it.

Regards from your "neighbour", Günther

Yes, spark plug number one and I also took care about the arrow on the clamp.
Red clamp on the plus on the alternator, black clamp on the negative and the green one on the negative pole of the ignition coil.

I also have a 5568 and it dosen't work in my car, with my MSD 8572 + 6AL box.
If I use a different timing light, I have no problems.
I also tryed on other cars with MSD, and it is the same problem !!!!!

So now I've bought a cheap timning light, so I can set my timing........

That's a great timing gun. I have the same one and haven't had any problems with it. I have heard that these timing lights are no good if you have an MSD box, so if you have it that might be the problem. Good luck.

I do it like this "A timing tape on the balancer and a normal timing light is cheaper and works better"

BUT why doesn't my 5568 work with MSD + 6AL ???

Back in the 60s they used to make dual point distributors that threw 2 sparks about 1/2 degree apart. Not too different from an MSD. Generally speaking, timing lights with variable advance never worked well with them. I think the timing light is extrapolating each multiple spark on a single stroke as 2 crank revolutions. That explains why rpm are high and timing is way off.
Although I do have an older Actron with a variable advance dial that I've used on both dual point and MSDs. I think it's hit or miss from model to model. Buy a cheap one without advance.

We use the 200.00 MSD and we a couple of the Faming river lights, I had and dial back Snap on and Mac lights and both worked fine but at the high RPM they seem to show more timing about 6 to 8 degree more. We sold those lights off.

Yesterday at a circle track event I was called to a car that was running hot and down on power and check the timing with my Flaming river light it showed about 48 degrees of timing over what ever light they had, Brought the timing back to 34 car ran fine rest of the day. HMMMMMMMMMM

I have a Snap-On Dial back and my trusty old Craftsman. I like timing tapes and degreed dampers. I just may do a test using the dial back and tape to see if they agree. Interesting...

But why don´t the manufacturers say in their descricption, that it won´t work with MSD? That sucks
On the website by Craftsman there is a timing light (item #00987701000), looks pretty similar to the Equus 5568. Is this the same product?

And on the first position there is also an interesting timing light, item #00914066000.
Do you know if this one is working with MSD?

Thanks, Günther

What do you think about the Actron CP7529? Does it work with MSD?

Thanks, Günther
