'74 Corvette Rear End - Clean & Paint Phase (Pics)
I got back to work on it....started with hand brushing and cleaning the brake calipers...
Before
After
Simple tools...
My shocks were VERY dirty....but they are only 5 or 6 years old....and still really good...
So I cleaned them with TSP...but they were stained...
So I masked the sticker....(I know...I'm nutz !)
And shot them white again....look pretty good huh ?!!!
Repainted the leaf spring...
And trailing arms...
Still gotta do the the wheel wells (next weekend) then I can put it all back together again !

Looks like your having way too much fun I love this stage of the rebuild, making the parts look new.
I too was surprised at how nice the shocks turned out!!
What kind of paint are you using on these items? For alot of this kind of work, I like to use epoxy paint (spray can)
Keep the pics coming.

Great job Mr JLR
Nuts? No your not nuts for detailing and painting your shocks. Thats what I would have done.
Speaking of done, I should have had mine rear end at least out by now but have been playing to much and need to get back to work on it but very glad I saw this post first and read your other post as well.
I'll raise the question again. What did you decide to do to your T/A's and or bearings? I havent order the T/A bushings or new bolt yet. Was going to order the T/A bolts from one of the big three vendors. Just wondering about the quality (grade) of the bolt they sell.
I do have the car ready and think I better get off my backside and get to work. BTW my car is a california car as well so maybe the T/A bolts wont be so bad either.
Keep up the good work.

For paint, I used white gloss enamel on the shocks, VHT semi-gloss black on the arms, VHT gloss red on the calipers and for the wheel wells I will use 3M black automotive undercoating (not done yet !). All just spray cans...grand total in paint $25.00.
As for the trailing arms, I determined the cheap u-joints I used last time (BIG mistake) were the noise I was getting back there (one was SHOT) so I cleaned them up, gave them a good visual inspection and gonna let them be...they were new from Van Steel only 5 or 6 years ago...and they look new again now !
I can't wait to get it back on the ground....buzz her around town for a week or 2 and then pull the engine !

Little details like that always makes things great, one step at a time and then one day you are actually done, I spent too many years on my 73 but at the end, it is all worth it. Keep up the good work !!!

Found VHT paint on the above site. Other nice things there too. Not sure if the best price.
Gotta say, Mr Jlr has re-motivated me. Bead blasted my ram horns and gave them one coat of POR- 15 exhaust manifold paint. 2nd coat goes on today.
