72 cigarette lighter wire
The cigarette lighter did not work when I bought the car. I checked the fuse and it was good so I unscrewed the console and no wires were connected. I searched on here and determined the wire should be orange and there was one with a connector on it so I tested it and got 10 volts? I went ahead and plugged it in and it does power my iPhone charger. Now this is the only wire connected I assume it's getting a ground from something else grounded in the console since it's charging my phone. I guess I have 2 questions....
Should there be another wire somehow connected to the lighter outlet for ground?
Why would I get 10 volts?
Thanks

The orange wire for the lighter is correct and a brown that holds the little light thats it. I'm not sure where it gets the ground. But I just did this and is working correctly.

Hmmm.... I'll have to look as there is no brown wire attached. I assume the bulb you are referring too is in the little section on the side of the lighter. Also I noticed an interior bulb of some kind wired up but lose in that section. Is there a bracket someplace this bulb should be mounted too.
Thanks for the help.

Under the climate control is the location for that bulb.(theres a hole for it) and yes the brown wire with bulb has a a metal type fixture that clips to the lighter housing

And is there a separate component that attaches to the lighter housing providing for the light? I see the notches and a wire with the metal connector.
Appreciate you help.
Thanks

Hi Max,
This is a 71; I'm not sure how similar a 72 is to this configuration.

Alan

On the underside of the metal console trim plate there should be an L shaped spade terminal just above the ashtray. Console grounds plugs to the spade terminal.
The lighter light has a small stamped steel hood on it. The prongs on the hood clip into the notches you see on the case of the lighter.

Installed to Console Bezel trim plate, when checking, lug you mentioned was not on new console trim plate.
Thanks

You are a great help, your pictures are great.
Seems like the connector on the orange wire is different in that mine plugs in from the side and not straight on like yours.
Thanks again
Max

Hi,
I believe this is the location of the ground connection in 1971.
You can just see it, (up right hand corner), and the hex head screw that fastens it to the controller body. Note how it's bent down.

Alan
