Default Edelbrock Performer Air-Gap under 1980/81 hood

Hello,

Who out there is running Edelbrock Performer Air-Gap (Not the RPM) under their stock 1980/81 hood with Q-jet and stock Twin snorkel air cleaner?

I know that the Edelbrock Performer will fit, but the Performer Air-Gap is based on the EPS and is 0.27" taller than Performer.

Anyone?

Yes I did. Me and few other members here.
With your stock hood you will need drop base. Period.

I run the performer EPS under a stock '79 hood with the dual snorkel setup. I also run the EDL 1411 carb though.

The dimensions of the EPS and Performer AIR Gap are almost the same.
It means that you can run the Performer Air Gap under the stock 1980/81 hood with the stock Air cleaner.

Please do not confuse the Performer Air Gap with the Performer RPM Air Gap.

With the Performer RPM Air Gap you will need either:
L88 Hood
or
Drop base air cleaner

Thanks Paul! I was wondering how big a difference there was between the performer and rpm air-gaps. A bit too much I see... L88 hood for sale anyone?

why would you not use just a dropped base air cleaner instead of an l88 hood am i missing something? seems nuts to change a hood when an air cleaner will do.

I'm changing from a Performer to an Air Gap right now. No other changes. I will report actual 1/4 mile performance difference, if any, in March.

No reason other than looks I really love that L88 hood

Also, though only a secondary argument: a tad cooler air.

But, I'll finish my 383 build first. By that time BKbroiler may have posted his results and then I'll see what I'll do.

Default It would fit under a 74' style 'long' hood

....see: plenty of room
Edelbrock Performer + stock Q-jet and drop-base 71' vette air cleaner...the hood never touched the pay-doh...

Also -my engine compartment is much improved now///

@MAR Did you have to adjust the throttle cable linkage with that drop base? How many inches does it drop?

Nope - didn't touch it as a matter of fact. I guess the stock cleaner element sat much higher over the the linkage. As you can see, there's at least 1-3/4" inches of clearance. Keep in mind that my 74' has the 73' and newer 'long hood' which has more clearance between the air cleaner and hood. I gained over an inch or so at least. I could not close the hood on the stock air cleaner - I had to remove the thick rubber gasket and even then I thought maybe it would clear, but under throttle torque, the engine might rotate enough in the engine mounts to cause a side of the air cleaner element to rub or touch on the top of the hood. I got one of the aftermarket drop base kits for early 70's vettes from Norm Werner and it fit perfect and resulted in almost 1-3/4" of extra clearance over the stock unit! I lost my dedicated cold air intake system though. But if you notice none of the early 70's vette's had 'cold air intake systems either - just open air cleaner elements. In the photos above the hood never touched the play doh! So in this respedt, it might be a real good clearance mitigation strategy for the pre-73' hoods??
