Speedometer/Odometer in 72 not registering mileage

Speedometer/Odometer in 72 not registering mileage
The speedometer is telling me how fast I am going but the miles are not being recorded! 
Checked the speedometer cable and it is tight at the speedometer and the transmission. Anyone run into this problem before? 
Was working fine the last time I drove it!
Any ideas, please let me know. Thanks

If the speedo is telling you your mph accurately, chances are there is nothing wrong with the cable, it is most likely something inside the speedo itself. That's about all I got for ya.
