I rented an engine hoist to yank my engine out today. The boom was only 50" long, and wasn't long enough to pull the engine out without the upright on the hoist hitting the front of the car. Does anyone know of a model of engine hoist that *FOR SURE* works? I asked this question before, but couldn't find the post or the answers.

Maxim hoist (cherry picker) You can get them for about $165.00 at discount tool places or flee markets. The boom extends way out there.

I thought most people pulled the engine from the side because of the nose...

You know chris I think I did mine from the side also, I do remember swinging around to the front to get better "push and shove" action once I got the engine close. My "cherry picker reaches out I can do it from the front but it gets a little light on the back end once you start lifting because the boom is out so far. The legs extend also but they only go about 6" shorter than the boom.

I went through this last year. I pulled the 350 and TH400 as one unit out the front of the car when it was 20" up on jack stands and no front suspension. I looked throught the tool catalogs,rent shops,etc. Finally found a USA made hoist with an 8 ton ram and over 5' boom at a swap meet for $225. I think Northern sells Arcan hoists that have the sizing you need, they have a web site but I don't recall it off hand. Plus the only way I was able to do this was with a tilter, I had to change position 1/2 way through a couple of times.

I pulled my Engine and 4-speed out together from the side with a rented hoist.

I used one like "76 red" last year. It was a tight fit to take the engine out and in, I used the dip behind the left fender , I had the corvette front wheels up on a wheel ramp to get underneath so if you dont have yours on ramps than you should have more clearance than i had. i also would suggests a tilter like one of the guys said previously I wished i would have had one last year it helps to make the installation a lot easier

I got my AC-Delco picker from O'Riley (Hi-Lo) Auto Parts for $199, and pulled the engine from the side. Lifts 1000lbs. fully extended, and folds up.

Steve, the boom on mine is 66 inches, effective length...that is from front of vertical support to end of boom...making work length 65 inches....that's long enough for any car....

thing is it's not just boom length, as the engine can't be suspended beyond the front wheels of the hoist, unless you want an accident...

Thanks for the suggestions. Now I need to find some place that rents one. I wouldn't mind buying one, except I'd almost never use it and I don't have the room to store one right now.

Ditto... a couple of times. Works fine and has for many, many C3ers. IMHO don't waste your $$$ buying one or time looking around for one.

How the hell did you guys do it from the side? The hoist I rented and put together didn't looked like one of the pieces that extended outwards would hit the wheel or the jackstand. Maybe i could just jack it in a different place. Did you have the car on stands or on the ground?

I've always straddled the right front wheel with the picker feet and went at it on an angle. With the car on the ground for headroom and to maneuver the car fore and aft :cheers:

Steve - If you don't mind a suggestion from left field, I pulled mine (engine and TH400) from the front with one like 76 Red pictured. I used a load leveler to put it in an extreme tilt to clear the nose. I also had to yank the front tires off and set it down on blocks because the nose came up too high with the weight of the engine and tranny off of the chassis. Going back in with the 502 and 700R4, I broke down and hired a wrecker with a boom truck (cost $40) and we were done in 15 minutes. I'll never pull one the hard way again.

Because of a post in my shop, I pull the left front wheel off ( blocked naturally ) put the picker in at an angle from the left side and then with the wheel gone it is no problem to move the picker sideways and the engine/trans comes out over the front of the car. The bar to help change the centre of grav really helps.

I pulled my engine/tranny together as a unit from the left side. I used a leveler to make it easier. Removing the left wheel/tire is a good tip when the car is
on jackstands. I placed several quilts/blankets on the upper surround to protect the paint. It probably took me 1-2 hrs to pull the engine by myself....not too bad of a job, but having that heavy assembly dangling over the frontend of the car :eek:

I pulled my big block from the side. I also took the wheel off so that I could move the hoist around a little easier.
