Can't Get My Starter To Disengage
Well you guys were right! It was that my starter didn't disengage and the solenoid shorted. But today I installed a new starter and when I keyed the ignition the car started and the starter kept turning! What would cause this? I disconnected the battery to make it stop and when I reconnected it (expecting the starter to turn again) it just sat waiting to be started again with the power on. Does anyone have any ideas? :nonod:

I'm assuming it's binding on the larger gear. If that's the case...
Looks like you may need to shim the starter. that should make it bind less with the large gear and release easier. They make special shims just for this - available anywhere.

Would this cause it to continue running? The only way I can stop it is to disconnect the battery terminals.

I had a similar problem once where I couldn't get it to stop and I was forced to drive home. I bought a starter, alternator and flexplate that weekend. It was obvious that the soleniod went bad and got stuck. My boss told me a story once where his old Pontiac was just sitting in the driveway minding it's own business and began to turn over. On it's own.

I'm not sure if it would keep running. I doubt it. I think I'd pull the starter and see if the bendix pops back in. Maybe it's not a bind on the large gear but a defective starter or selenoid. I've gotten bad starters out of the box before.
Could also be a wiring problem. If you had the starter tested, you could rule it out as the culprit.

Well, what are the chances it's a bad starter and its doing the same thing it did when my last starter went?

Actually, the odds are pretty good considering the quality of parts these days.
I also had this problem and a new starter fixed it. I'd go ahead and return the second one and if the third also acts up, its time to start shimming.
