Default Umm this may be a stupid question...its on valve covers

I bought a chrome valve cover kit by spectre from autozone the other week and pulled out my exisiting valve covers. Maybe its me but...where the hell do I pour my oil in with the spectre chrome valve covers. The valve covers have one hole each with would seem correct and mirror imaged on the stock valve covers but the left valve cover the one on the alternator side has a second big hole with a nice oil cap for pouring oil into the system. The spectre chrome one doesn't have such an opening. Does it require I pull out my PCV valve and pop a funnel in when I want to put oil in the vette? I'm completely dumbstruck. The box has 2 valve covers with one hole each so I couldn't have been given two right valve covers or something. Does it matter which side I pour oil in? I never would of thought such a simple task of pouring in oil through the valve covers could lead to a "...what the hell?" Also what is this breather cap?

As long as you have the PCV on one side and the crankcase to air breather on the other side you are fine. Yes the oil can be poured in the PCV hole with a funnel. The side does not matter.

Thanks Paul79 I saw a bunch of under the hood pics of alot of the fellow vette owners on this forum and came to that conclusion but wanted to be sure. Thanks once again!

You want to make sure that the PCV hole has a baffle otherwise you will be sucking oil thru the PCV. Some of the "dressup" valve covers do not have baffles. If there is a baffle, pour the oil in slowly otherwise it may backup a tad and overflow....

Suggest you pull out both the PCV and the rubber grommet to give the oil more room to flow around the baffle then simply replace both when you are finished.

Older car (pre-1967) used an "oil filler neck" on the intake manifold.
Sounds like you got the 'old' style 327 valve covers to me..... :yesnod:

This is so weird. I just came across this same trouble today. My covers also don't don't have a filler cap (something I'd never heard of). The car is fairly new to me so when I decided to change the oil I found myself wondering where to put the stuff. Glad I'm not alone.

Actually....my '68 (327) also has the oil filler neck on the manifold. This feature disappeared after this model year. Many aftermarket covers, designed for '68 and earlier, do not have a separate oil fill cap hence the problem noted. I had toyed (since rejected) swapping my stock manifold in favour of an Edelbrock Performer, knowing I would lose the oil fill tube and have to do the PCV thing. I rejected it only because I like the stock look of the oil fill tube.

I pull out the PVC and JAM my funnel into the hole. The rubber grommit makes a nice seal and it's doesn't leak all over the engine :D

I guess this must depend on the design/height of the baffle. If you tried this on mine, there would be very little clearance for the oil to flow as the funnel would be jammed up against the baffle. Point taken though, that he'd be well advised to inspect his covers to determine which approach will work best in his situation.
