Default Steering Wheel off Center - not alignment

73 Vert,

Just (nearly) finished the assembly of a frame off. All is well, except the steering wheel is off to the right about 45 degrees - car goes straight (it's not "alignment").

I apparently assembled something back together incorrectly. As I recall, the steering wheel and assembly (tilt/tele) only goes on one way..

Thoughts?

thanks

Did you have steering box arm off the steering box? I did. And when I put the new box on I installed it in the wrong position. It was off a quarter turn.

Well, yes I did have that arm off. I assume you are talking about the "Pitman Arm".

I thought that would only go on ONE way??

A car can drive perfectly and still be aligned wrong with respect to the steering wheel position.

Yeah, Pitman arm... Couldn't remember the name just then!! I also thought it went on one way, as I put a Flaming River U-joint steering coupler on, instead of the rag-joint. Took everything apart, re-installed, and it came out correct. I changed from power steering, to manual, and the pitman arm is different, hence the change.

Why do you state that "it's not the alignment"? If the steering box is centered, and the steering column is aligned properly with it when you installed the U-joint, and the steering wheel is properly aligned with the index mark on the shaft, then the alignment MUST be off. All it takes to get it properly aligned is some (toe) adjustments to the steering rods.
