Default Rebuild vapor canister?

Is it possible to rebuild the vapor canister including actually replacing the activated charcoal? I have the unit out and was thinking it would be good to replace both the filter and the charcoal. The filter is easy but the unit appears sealed. Could you carefully cut en around the top or bottom seem and refill?

I also looked at zips, etc for a complete replacement but could not find one.

Yes. You can...and I did. There is a pretty good write-up on just how to do it at the following website:

http://jeep.smallcraft.net/completed_projects/canister/

You can find the activated charcoal at Petco in the 'fish' area. It is used to filter chlorine, etc. out of tap water for the fish tank. You can get by with 1 quart of the stuff...but it will not totally fill the cannister.

P.S. Don't cut through the tank too low toward the bottom; you need to cut across it at about 3/4"-1" up from the bottom surface to make certain you hit an 'open' area. I chose to cut across at the level where the outer support band would fit...so that it would hide my handiwork. The 2-tube type J.B. Weld epoxy does a good job of joining the tank sections back together again (after you get the cut edges good and flat/smooth).

I just finished doing mine and documented it on the NCRS forum as well as my 71 Journey thread here

http://www.australiancorvettes.com/p...=asc&start=540

I removed part of bottom grill to do mine and it worked out fairly well,

Hi Craig,
It's great that you posted your link here too!
So many people ask about rebuilding the canister.

Great write-ups guys, thanks. Need to decide which method I want to try in order to open it up but both seem very doable.

Where did you get the foam filter for top & bottom?

Look at NAPA.

...or autozone for a cheaper one.

I had some compressed foam in the garage from packaging but when I was at the pet supply place they had what was called charcoal foam in packets for filters , so you could use that as well.

There is another write up her on this forum where he was able to get new charcoal in without cutting it open.

However if you feel you need to replace the foam material you have little choice.

You have to replace the foam material as there isn't any of the original foam left in there.

I see, I was not familiar with the differences between the years on then canister. I saw some others that had less ports but I have no idea if they are compatible as I have never seen the 70's version.
