Fan belt problems – what's as good as OEM?
I know this must have been discussed on this forum, but I don't remember having read it. I had to replace the fan belt on my '73 a few days ago. It's the belt that runs the fan and alternator, small block. Bought the belt at NAPA. It's not a solid belt like the one I replaced. This one has those "teeth" on the inside of the belt. Counter man told me that's to make it run cooler. I installed the belt and right at 60 mph it squeals. Piercingly loud. I tightened it, to no avail. Took it back today and got another one, same type, same problem. Any time I get into the throttle at all, the belt slips. The belt cost me nearly $20, which should be enough to get decent quality. The old belt, which by the way, was so old it had begun to delaminate, never made a sound. Anyone got a belt to recommend?

I had some squeeling problems a while back and finally got all of them at an AC Delco dealer...They all fit perfect and are quiet.

It seems all belts are now a daze made metric, and somehow they are not the right width across the back anymore....too narrow seems to be the choice, and they ride down in the grooves....another thing is I wonder if the pitch of the V slot is the same, I think they ride differantly and do not have as much surface contact area....
either that, or it's an EPA think, trying to get more fuel economy/efficiency fron the drive system.....
I had the problem on my '72 some years ago with the stock system, same thing your experiencing...and I have a lot of belt squeel on my old Dodge work van...

Thanks to all for your replies.
StrayDog, drop me an e-mail if you can and let me know how those Quanta Products belts work out.
Silvervetteman, thanks for the Delco tip.
