Default rear (differential) crossmember bushing

I just got my new bushings in.

Do the bushings need to touch the from on the top ?

I'm asking because I had my frame zinc and powder coated, so there is an additional thichness between the bushing and the frame hat.

bump for you-
Are you referring to the 2 large bushings in the differential cross-member ?
If so , its not clear to me what your asking , I'm guessing that's why no one has answered.

Yep, those. These have a rubber part on top (the part that goes onto the frame). Does this need to touch the frame ?

That looks normal to me. The relative sizes of the 'cones' ensure that the rubber does not touch the frame, the idea being that it isolates vibration.

with Mike , rubber doesn't touch the frame. Your pic looks normal.

Seems to me it should touch the frame. I'm pretty sure the factory ones did. I'll go out and look at my original 1970 frame. It still has the factory crossmember installed.

The two repro bushings I've installed didn't.

Here are a couple pics I snagged. In the first pic the puller is just hanging there.
In the second pic you can see how the aluminum disc forces the cross member in a little deeper but it doesn't touch.

I went out an looked at my original 1970 frame and it's differential crossmember bushing. I looks like there's about 3/8 inch clearance between the bushing cushion and the frame. I was surprised. I thought the bushing would be flush with the frame.

For my new 1970, I have a new frame that I'm building up with suspension, engine, tranny, etc. I have the differential crossmember installed with new bushings. I think they actually have more clearance than the factory measurements;i.e. more than 3/8. On my 68 I sanded the frame male parts and the bushing female parts to get them to match up closer. I've decided to delay this sanding/grinding proces until I get ready for a final install. I can't check out the clearance issue with the 68 since I have to remove the wheel. On my 68, I was able to get the bushing flange

Thanks guys for this good info. I know now that I can safely continue to mount things.

This will be my final assembly. After that I hope everything runs as planned.

I looked at this and thought i had a problem.

Yes I searched out this old thread and was compairing it to my car. But I was not sure if the gap in my pictures was actually that area referred to in this thread and that it was normal. It's my first Corvette and I'm still learning.
