Default air intake suggestions?

i have a 79 L82 that the previous owner made into a open air intake, but left the bottom of the stock assembly so im trying to decide if i should just get a different bottom or change it back to original and get the other pieces that im missing and close it back up so it would be a cool air intake. hope that makes sense. any suggetions would be appreciated, thanks

So you have an open element air cleaner now, and you are wanting to know if you should go back to stock? There are advantages to each. The open element allows more air in, the stock setup, if you have all the parts, channels somewhat cooler air, but less of it. There will be posts on either side of this issue. Are you having issues now, or are you thinking that you will pick up power if you switch?

no issues but i have yet to drive it other than moving it around on the driveway. the prob is more with the looks with the bottom of the stock looking like its missing the other pieces.

I've had both an open element and the factory ducted system on mine. Observations: the open element one looks racier and has a nice sound under hard acceleration. Power gains are mostly in upper RPM ranges which most of us have little opportunity to use. The factory ducted one with dual snorkels potentially helps mileage by bringing cooler forced air over the radiator to the engine with the most benefit at low and mid-range RPM's. It doesn't look as "trick" but may be a very practical choice, especially with a high-end filter. It really comes down to "which one do I really want?". I have both and switch out according to the mood. It's hard to hear the "moan" from the open element over my cam and mufflers anyway. Choises...choices...

If you can duct fresh intake air in front of the rad, really the way to go. Sometimes tough to do, but worth the effort, especially on hot days. I usually just modify a factory air cleaner housing with some handi-work and flex hose.

The stock system pulls cool air over the top of the radiator support.
