How would new Viper compare to a Ramjet 502 crate engine?
New Viper engine is 500/500/500 500 cubic inches, 500 hp, 500 lb/ft torque, but that is NET. (also 10 cylinders). GM performance crate engine is 502 cubic inches (8 cylinders), rated at 510 hp and 550 lbs torque, but I believe those are gross #s. How would they compare on a dyno? (Side by side out of the car comparison). MJ

Gotta love those new Mopar engines! I want an old Plymouth just to have a reason to buy one of those Viper engines or the 528 Hemi :)
I don't see how the 502 could keep up with either Mopar offering. You'd have to go to the GM aftermarket to complete. I'd love to know what that new Viper has at the rear wheels. Anyone read a test yet?

isn't a 528 Hemi aftermarket??
Too bad they don't sell the new 500hp Viper engine in a crate yet.

528 Hemi 610 Horsepower V8 Crate Motor
Bigger is truly better in high performance engines. Mopar Performance parts has developed a King-Kong size 528 Hemi Crate Motor which cranks out a whopping 610 horsepower and 650 ft.-lbs. of torque!
Features include:
· Heavy duty cast iron block with cross-bolted mains
· Aluminum heads
· Stainless steel 2.25" intake valves and 1.94" exhaust valves
· Heavy duty single valve springs
· Premium material umbrella-type valve stem seals
· 292 - .524"/.543" lift hydraulic cam
· Forged 10.25 : 1 compression ratio pistons - 4.500" bore
· Aluminum dual plane M1 4bbl intake manifold
· Forged steel crankshaft - 4.15" stroke
· Precision double roller timing chain and sprockets
· Spark plugs wires and breathers included
· Heavy-duty engine stand and shipping crate included
The 610 horsepower HEMI comes with Mopar Performance Parts cast aluminum valve covers and a chrome front cover, as well as Mopar's precise high performance electronic distributor. The motor comes with a basic 6-quart rear sump oil pan (1970-71 "E"- body style). Mopar Performance Parts recommends that for maximum performance, a 850/900 cfm Holley carburetor and 2 1/4" headers be used (not included).
P4786690 528 Hemi crate motor - 610 horsepower, 650 ft.-lbs. Torque
Note: 10.25:1 compression ratio with aluminum heads allows the use of current high octane (premium) pump gas and yet the total package makes more power than the original high ratio production version (as seen in Sept. 1997 issue of Car Crafe). Equipped with black finished cast aluminum valve covers.
Note: Hemi crate motors which change the emissions performance of the vehicle may not be legal for use on vehicles regulated for highway use in California and other states. Purchase must sign Purchage Agreement stating engines are for off-road vehicles only.

Ok, now compare the price of that Hemi 528, to the 502. Try about an easy 5-7K difference
