Default Electronic flasher problem

My stock flasher was getting intermittant, so I got an electronic flasher replacement so I could upgrade to LED's. Turns out the problem with the old flasher was just bad connections, but I installed the new one anyway - but it wouldn't work. It came with a ground wire which I did connect, but no joy. I checked on the bench with a bulb and 12v power sourse and it worked fine. Is there any reason it wouldn't work in my 82? It does have the front marker lights that blink opposite of the turn signals. I have the wiring diagram for the car, but it does not detail the switch internal action.

I run an electronic flasher in my 74, so it should work fine for you. What part number did you get. For some reason I remember there being a 12 in the #.

If the flasher works on the bench, could be a contact corrosion problem in the car. Maybe pick up some spray Deoxit, and hit the fuse panel plug with it. Not sure where you got your electronic flasher from, but maybe check the Waytek Wire site, #47972 or 47973. The 47972 is LED rated down to 1 amp, and maybe what you're looking for. Many here, put a load resistor across the LED terminals, to make the OEM flasher think it's still seeing the original 1157 bulbs. If doing lots of automotive wiring, good getting the Waytek Wire hard copy, as pretty much has everything.

The flasher p/n is 90650, 12volt 20amp LED flasher. I am going to do a little more testing after work today...

My 1981 has LED tail lights installed. The electronic flasher would not flash the turn signals,(factory installed flasher wouldn't either) but the brake lights worked OK. I found a previous thread that had the same problem. By changing the flasher to a Tridon EL12 heavy duty unit, his turn signals worked. I replaced my electronic flasher with the heavy duty one and now my turn signals(and brake lights) work OK.

The EL12 is also an electronic flasher. Some work better than others and some are just bad.

I tried it again tonight, made extension wires so I know it wasn't bad connections at the fuse block. It did not work in the car, but will on the bench with 1 bulb. I don't have any LED lights yet so I didn't get to try that. I purchased this flasher from Ecklers, advertise as for this car.

Could be a dud flasher.

If you have an Advance auto parts near you go to their site, add the EL12 flasher to your cart, add coupon code P20, and select for pickup at the store near you. Try that and see what happens. If it does the same thing its probably your car. If it fixs it then probably a dud flasher.

Figured it out. The instructions with the flasher said power to terminal X, ground the extra wire & load to terminal L - this worked fine on the bench. Checked it in the car and I had 12v. on L, not X. The back of the package listed 3 part #'s, mine/3-terminal/2-terminal reversed polarity. (Ah-Ha!)
Checked the old mechanical flasher and it was the same as the electronic flasher, not reversed - but it worked with polarity either way in testing.
So the moral of the story is this car, at least this year, requires a reversed polarity flasher if installing an electronic unit. Doesn't matter with the old style.

I'm digging this thread up to through out a bit "THANKS!!" to V8Ranger. I have a 1980 and had been trying to figure out why my electronic flasher from Ecklers would not work at all. I reversed the polarity and what do you know, magic.

Yep - this thread was HELPFUL! Was about to whip these damn things against the wall. Reversing polarity solved the problem! Soldered up some jumpers to save the day, hooray! Thanks guys!
