Default Considering A LS3/T56 Magnum Swap

Hi all,
I have a 76 which has the metal floor. I am wanting a T56 magnum over a T56, to solve the mechanical speedometer drive problem (has both outputs for mechanical and VSS) and for the better design. However I want to keep the stock a/c controls, console and park brake cover. I will use a vendor supplied kit to provide proper shifter location and fit. I understand the T56 magnum requires more tunnel cutting than the regular T56. Any reason this won't work? My searches have turn up little on the fit of a T56 magnum with a/c controls and stock console.

You may want to contact Josh at Custom Image Corvettes in SD, as does LS conversions, and can supply just about anything needed for this.

I am installing a T-56 Magnum behind a big block on my '75. Trasnmission was purchased from Hurst Performance.

Tunnel needed to be cut for the shifter and will be have to be clearances for the the yoke. Have a 1310 yoke but am going to upgrade to 1350. I am using solid motor mounts and the transmission is offset to the passenger side a bit.

I already have a removable crossmember, am waiting for my T56 crossmember from Bow Tie Overdrives. If your crossmember is welded in, you will need to make it removable.

I got a shifter for a 70-81 Camaro from Hurst. Hadto remove four Allen bolts and rotate it 180 degrees. Fit the stock console perfectly.

As for as I know, no-one makes a direct swap kit due to the mods necessary.

Actually, just recalled it's member "Gordonm" that recently did an LS3/T56 swap into his C3. He posted several threads on his progress, with pics. Probably good idea searching them, to see what went on.

I just need a little more info. I plan to put mine behind an LS3, my crossmember is fixed and will require modification. I was concerned the T-56 magnum vs the original T-56, required more tunnel cutting other than the shifter area. I have most of the details figured out, the only thing I haven't found is, will the tunnel mods allow the factory a/c controls fit? If the tunnel cutting does not interfere with the a/c control and the clearancing does not interfere with the parking brake/cover, then I'm ready to proceed. I did find this, that should help alot http://americanpowertrain.com/i-8521...-corvette.html I

Thanks for the tip, I had read "Gordonm's" thread, I was under the impression that he used a regular T-56, did not see mention of it anywhere. I read somewhere the T-56 Magnum was larger at the top and may fit tighter, so I had concernes about retaining the a/c controls.

I have a Viper T56 laying around.. To be honest, I did not notice any difference in the size of the transmission case between the Viper T56 and the Magnum T56. I am pretty sure they are all the same size. I think the only difference would be the tail shaft housing.. Have you contacted American Powertrain? They are a forum vendor!

Yes my T56 is from an 06 GTO so it was different from the Magnum version. Mine required a little tunnel cutting and I am using a custom shift plate. Also using Vinatge Air custom HVAC controls.

I have read the Manum T56 is taller and possibly wider at the top and may require cutting of the tunnel towards the front, however I have not been able to confirm this. I did contact A/P they did not have specifics about the fit, only that with the pro fit kit, the shifter location will be in the original location, and the tunnel will have to be cut around the shifter, same as other T56 transmissions. Gordonm, what did you do for the VSS and speedometer drive?

I am running an electronic speedo now so it was an easy hookup. I ditched the stock gauges when I went with the T56 2 years ago.

I have a T56 Magnum installed in my C2 and it was a tight fit but did not require any tunnel mods. An offset shifter is required.
