Default dumb question of the day

Ok,

So I have this little metal pipe that snakes from the left side of the air compressor under the bracket to the water pump.

There is a short 4 inch piece of tubing attaching this pipe to the water pump.

The other end of the pipe has the heater hose.

What is the purpose of the little piece of pipe? Why is it even there?

Is there some mystic Cheverolet reason the hose can't run straight to the water pump?

mine had some similar piping, i think gm was worried about the hose rubbing or being near the exhaust manifold and hot engine parts.

It is one hell of a bend to get that hose up to the heater core as well.

Have this on my 81.

Yes, mine is an 81 as well. There is a brutal bend down by the core .... almost a 180. But the water pump is at the other end.

I'm thinking it is probably the potential chafing of the hose between the movement of the engine and frame.

The tube I have is a little corroded. Usable, but I may try and figure something else out.

I had one of those also in my 1976. Just thought is was a long nipple , maybe used to keep the hose from being too close to something, not sure.

It's probably stock and routes the heater hose under the AC compressor. AIM will show it if it's applicable to your model year.

I know, I know, this is an old post but I am doing a search and also looking for the 3/4" heater hose coolant pipe that goes behind the a/c compressor. It is GM # 14020090. Mine is corroded and still useable but I am doing a coolant system replacement on my '82 and would like to replace it. If there is any new information out there I would be interested in hearing about it. Thanks!

Outstanding! Many thanks. I was at the CorvetteCentral site earlier and couldn't find it. Gotta love Amazon.

Usually, I tell people that their "dumb question" isn't as dumb as they may think, but, yeah, you're right, this is a really dumb question.
