69 big block water pump belts
Hi,
I have a 1969 L36 427 with air and power steering. The belt setup on the car when I bought it has a short belt from the crank to water pump only with no tensioner or adjuster. Is this setup correct? Other Corvettes I have seen have a tensioner that pushes on outside of this belt and tensions it. thanks. Randy

Randy, when you say "with air" I'm assuming you mean air conditioning. If so, then yes, you should have the tensioner. If you check out the AIM (UPC N40, sheet A7, view B), you'll see the belt configuration for the L36 (and L71) with C60 (A/C) and N40 (P/S).

Ol' Red has the N40 (power steering) no a/c. 3 belts- crank to water pump, then crank to water pump to power steering pump, then one from the power steering pump to the alternator. Be careful of the crank to water pump belt- too short and it'll eat water pump bearings, too long and it'll slip.

Short belt from crank to water pump is normal for all big-block setups
Looks like they added an idler wheel to that belt when the big block also had air conditioning.

To change that short belt, just loosen the nuts on the fan/pulley at the water pump shaft. Then you can tilt the pulley to remove/install the belt.
