Default 1982 ESC module

A code 43 has been haunting me.
I found the connector to the knock sensor has dissovled (for lack of a better description). Also seems to be unavailable (the connector).

Most seem to recommend updating the knock sensor, and I could also order a matching connector.. Easy right?

Problem 1.
Original is 2 wire (Coax).

Problem 2.
Wire(s) do not OHM back to ESC

Problem 3.
ESC wiring does not match any diagram I can locate. I have more positions and wires.

will try getting pics of connector/ESC up today

Do you have access to a shop manual that has the pinouts of the ECM and the original ESC unit? Depending on what the electrical requirements are/were for the stock ESC unit we might be able to do a little wiring modification to get a later ESC to work.

I have 10 wires to/from the ESC. The manuals show 5... There are also 3 more slots... manual stops at "K" , my connector runs thru "N"

Perhaps coax was a bad description. Foil shield touching a second conductor

The yellow arrow indicates where the center conductor attached
the red arrow is where the shield attached.

If the non matching wiring is not enough... I have determined none of the connections at the ESC, OHM to the sensor wires.

Just curious, do you suspect any damage to the actual ESC module? Can you locate a sensor for an '84 and just run a test wire up to your present ESC module?

Meanwhile, just been trying to find some old paperwork (found some, still looking for the rest), and I believe you should be able to use a later ESC module without much hassle if you want. IIRC, the guts of your '82 ESC module are electrically/functionally similar to the later ('84 and on) ESC units. Off the top of my head the '84 ESC module (HKR broadcast code?) and sensor should work in your application. The '82 and '84 engines should have a reasonably close noise signature, and the '84 module is not excessively sensitive, so it would be a little more forgiving if your engine is a bit mechanically noisey. It seems the most difficult part of the deal would be to modify your ESC harness or to make a short adapter harness.

Do not have any reason to believe original sensor is bad. Can't find a connector for original.
I have already purchased an 84/85 knock sensor along with the matching connector. I already considered running a test wire....

Nothing about my ESC connections match the manuals. Just where am I supposed to connect the test wire?

Pin B (496) is the sensor input according to your diagrams. You'll have to decide whether to remove the original wire from the connector, or just hook the sensor to the original wire end down by the sensor itself.

I'll confess some confusion regarding the number of wires that are on the connector itself. The ESC unit only needs 4 or 5 wires to do its thing. I'll do some looking around to see what I can find out.

I cannot find ANYTHING to identify this many wires to the ESC. Yet nothing looks modified. All looks like factory wraps, tapes, mouning holes used...

I talked to a friend with an '82. His ESC unit (attached to the ECM area)has 5 wires going to it, with a whitish clear connector. He asked if the ten wire item was possibly the wiper delay box.

Update...
I got brave and ran a test connection from the sensor, thru the window to (495???) of ESC. NO Check engine light. Cycled from cold start to 200deg 3 Times with no light.

Next weekend I will run a more permanent wire, and test drive.
Am really sweating the other wires.... Any more issues could get ugly.

I have the GM shop manual. It looks just like everyone else's manual. I don't need more copies of the same diagrams. If your manual only shows 5 wires, I have it.
What I cannot find is a 10 wire version.

It is not the wiper module/relay. That is working perfectly (yea)!
