Default '68 Turn Signal Woes...

Hello All,

I just recently stepped into the Corvette world, with the purchase of a '68 convertible. Everything has been great until recently when I noticed my turn signals stopped working. The turn lights on the dash do not light up nor do the signals themselves. The thing is, the hazards work as they should.

Here is what I have done already through searching the web...

1. Replaced the fuse with a new 20A fuse on the drivers side firewall.

2. Replaced the turn signal flasher that was under the radio on the center console. (damn that was a pain to find)

3. Unhooked the steering column harness and made sure everything was not corroded and making a good connection.

After all of this, then accidentally unhooking a vacuum line and taking 3 hours to figure out why my headlights wouldn't go down (fixed now) My signals still don't work.

Any suggestions? All I can think of is a ground issue now.

TIA...

Shane

EDIT Originally in #2 I called it the flasher fuse and not the turn signal flasher. Sorry for the confusion.

Have you tested/replaced the turn signal flasher?

turn signal flasher should be behind lower dash pad on passenger side just up above the footwell light. Hopefully it's as easy as that!

Yeah... That was the second thing. I should have said the turn signal flasher instead of the flasher fuse. (sorry for the confusion) It was a pain to find though as I was looking on the passnger side by the courtesy lamp. Mine was under the radio in a bracket. Unless I changed out the wrong thing. It had a purple wire running to it and the flasher unit fit ???

My 70 kept blowing the turn signal fuze that is on the drivers side up under the dash.
Found the back up light wire running to the transmission switch on the tranny was laying on the exhaust pipe and had burned off the insulation and shorted out.

i got my 68 signals to work by unlocking the tele-scopeing colum lock, and slightly moving either in or out while trying the blinkers,,at a certain spot they started to work,,then i locked the column switch,,,been working for a few years now.good luck with yours.i believe theres some kind of part that may need adjustment behind the horn button on the steering wheel

Ok Everyone, I appreciate your help on this. My signals started working for a couple days, then back out again. But today, I noticed something. When you apply the brakes, then hit the turn signal, the rear lights go on that side. So say you turn right, the right brake lights go out and vice versa turning left.

Any ideas?

TIA

Have you ruled out the turn signal switch behind the steering wheel? If there's continuity to the lights, which there seems to be if the brake lights work, then I would start looking at the turn signal switch.

In my experience, the replacement switches readily available from aftermarket suppliers are not very good. I replaced 2 different turn signal switches in my '68 over a 2 year period. I sourced an NOS one off of EBay and it's been working fine for abut 4+ years.

Also, verify you replaced the turn signal flasher and not some other relay. Mine is near the courtesy light under the passenger side dash over near the ball vent on the right side. Hard to see unless you get on your back and stick your head under there.

Good luck.

If I remember right, there are 2 flasher relays - one in the console and one behind the passenger dash. One does the emergency flashers and the other does the turn signals. Can't remember which is which, but turn on the emergency flashers and see which relay is "clicking".

Hope that helps.

The four way ( hazzard ) flasher is in the upper left hand corner of the fuse block. The turn signal flasher is behind the passenger dash pad by the round astro vent. I think the flasher in the center consol is for the optional alarm on a 68. Lou.

If you want to test the turn signal switch.. here is a page I did a few years back.... Just click on supporting document and it will open in a pdf.

I ran into exactly the same thing..the problem started occurring after I dropped my tank to retrieve the tank sticker, so it took a little while to figure out it wasn't related. Easy enough fix at least...
