I wish I had the forethought to get the ZZ4 before I had the original motor rebuilt :cry At the time I was more concerned with matching #'s but now if I blow the motor I am butt out. I could have bought the ZZ4 and kept the original block on a stand in the corner of the garage until it was needed for resale....Well if you guys get too old for the excitment let me know I'll take the ZZ4 off your hands.
Congratulations!

Hey John, no risk of me trying that myself!

John,
If I have to keep looking at your signature I'll have to throw out the white paint I just bought and go buy some war bonnet yellow. Looks Great!

I am very impressed with my ZZ4. This motor rocks! The first time I stopped to fill up with gas I left the station sideways. Now if I can just solve the carb problems. Does anyone know what would cause a carb to go lean at around 4k rpm??

If you're thinking about changing the gearing, check out this website:
http://corvetteperfection.com/corvetteperfection001.htm
They rebuild your rearend and will swap out the gears at no extra charge! The cost for the rebuild is extremely well priced at $375. Of course, shipping freight is going to cost a pretty penny, and you'll have to pull the diff yourself, unless you want to drive to Beloit Wisconsin.

Hey MG, how much did that ZZ4 set you back in our canuck bucks?

Nikki Cupit is the parts manager at John Bear, and she's very helpful. She had the engine delivered straight to my mechanic, free of charge, 2 days after I ordered it.

Honey, you've gotta do a load o' laundry, 'cause I need new underwear ....
Unbelieveable!!! The torque is amazing, both off the line and when you go WOT while already at speed. The scream of that engine when you stomp on it is like being too close to the Shuttle launch pad.
I strongly recommend to anyone thinking about getting a ZZ4 for the Vette ... RUN DON'T WALK TO YOUR GM GOODWRENCH DEALER NOW!
Line up beside me now, ricers. That's it. A little closer .... Let's have some funnnnnn .....

Congrats.....What did you do with the original engine?? You can make it just as strong..

If you are real good or have a good engine builder then maybe...
Most of us don't have the 'short block' experience needed to build a strong reliable bottom end and the ZZ4 is an excellent choice for the majority of C3 owners. Advantages include:
-Short Block-
New one piece rear main seal block
Roller cam and lifters
Steel crankshaft
Hyperu pistons
Powdered rods
-Complete Engine-
Aluminum center bolt heads
HEI Distributor
Decent dual plane intake
The complete engine listing shows parts you would be buying anyway to upgrade and old two piece rear main seal block with a non-roller camshaft. Add a steel crank, good pistons, camshaft and lifters and you can start to see the positive side of a ZZ4 swap.
Don't get me wrong, building a strong and reliable short block is a viable option and can be rewarding but not for most of us. Some have one built by the local shop or engine builder but this at least doubles the cost of doing the work yourself. And can you trust this builder to do what you want. This level of trust is usually proportional to the amount of money spent but not always. I had previously had two engines built that I was unhappy with before I installed the ZZ4. I'm sure many people can tell stories about problems with engines that they had built for them (New topic anyone?).
For those who can build a good engine themselves or have the bucks to have a good one built, then I applaud you, but for the rest of us the ZZ4 is a better choice.

Mark, I meant to tell you this on Sunday; every time your car shifts there is a puff of black smock out the tail pipe. I'ts not a lot, but enough to notice. I don't know it thats normal, not trying to alarm you.

I saw the Eldebrock crate 350 HP engine for $4999.00 and the 450 HP engine for $5999.00 both these use a hopped up ZZ4 sounds better to me for less. Check on Eldebrock/ SUMMIT websites.

Mark was talking Canadian dollars, so those engine you specified, by the time we paid exhcange, duty and other crap would be around $10,000
Lets just say from my local GM dealer an Goodwrench engine for my truck was going to cost me $3500CAD
