Default factory side pipes

Trying to mount factory 69 side pipes on my 70 vette / Need the best method to do it . I have the exhaust sidepipes mounted already , just need to figure how to mount the shields. Do you leave the 70 rockers on and bolt the insulators and shields setup to the rockers? If so would like to find a pair of used 70 rockers that I can customize. Thanks

Purchase the 69 assembly instruction manual and follow the factory installation diagrams. Stock rocker panels are not used. 68 and 69 use two piece rockers; 70 and up are one piece.

You gotta remove the rockers. You'll then find the cover holes don't align with the rocker mount points. To attach the cover to the rocker area you'll need to insert some type of threaded nut behind the frame rail/body lip to receive the screw. I was unable to figure out how to mount the ones provided with the covers. You can get them in there but didn't see a way to hold them in place while installing the cover. I tried several other blind nuts and finally went with nylon (similar to the self expanding household anchors because they were much easier to insert into the tiny area where the nuts belong. Suspect the nuts on the 69 are installed before the body is mounted to the frame.

Hi 70,
The side-pipe shield needs to be installed before the side pipe.
The large forward bracket on the shield can't slip into position with the pipe in place.
I needed to drill new holes too.
I test fit both the pipe and shield before drilling any holes. If the shield is mounted too high on the rocker channel the bottom of the pipe is visible.... not a good look.
Regards,
Alan

what he said...

While I was able to get the shield on after installing the side pipes it indeed took very careful manipulation of the shield to get the front started and then swing the rest into position. Pipes last would definitely be easier. And my shields are mounted as high as I could get them to cover the rocker area which does leave the lowest portion of the pipe exposed.

It's been years since I installed a set of factory side pipes, but I do remember that it was a lot easier to put the covers on, before the pipes.

If you have a 70 assembly manual, you may want to look at the accessory section, in the back. It seems to me that the 70 AIM had a section on installing the factory side pipes, with the page marked "cancelled". I think that Chevrolet contemplated offering the side pipes on the 70 Corvette, but cancelled the option, just before production started.

Hi,
Here's what I felt was a reasonable compromise between having the pipe covered and the shield at an acceptable height.
These are 69 shields painted black.
Regards,
Alan

Hi 70d,
Yes, the forward end of the fiberglass rocker panel needs to be cut for both the pipe and for the shield.

Alan
