Default Rebuild Stock HEI OR ??

Some of you may remember my thread "My '77 Died ". I replaced the coil, cap, ignition module and rotor to get the car to run so I could move it to it's winter home. There, w/ time on my side I removed the distributer to replace the pickup coil. I then discovered the vacuum advance was in-op so I ordered a new one, plus a capacitor in addition to a spring kit and the afore-mentioned coil , cap, rotor, module and seal ! I am now into this for almost $275 but will have a completely rebuilt AC-Delco, original, that lasted 35 years the first time. I could have ordered a "new" Accel unit from Summit , shipped for under $200!
Did I screw up ??

I don't think so....like you said, you have a rebuilt original. From what I remember, the HEI is one of the best units out there and probably just fine for your application. Where will you and the 77 be in 35 years from now? You made the right decision.....

IT's pretty hard to beat the HEI. You said yourself it lasted 35 years. That's $7.85 a year.

HEIs are simple when you understand them, they're bulletproof when build correctly, and the parts are cheap enough you can carry a spare everything. What's not to like?

Don't forget to put the heat sink goo on the bottom of the module.

HEI's do have a rep for retarding a high RPM. And i believe the fix is a performance module which i read u have replaced.
But i think u got some important experience from the overhaul and that may be more important than a cheap HEI.

Nice work and thx for posting,

I've been using Mallory, as a replacement, for the last 55 years, we use to adjust points, a pair of them. LOL I've had a couple of OEM, HEI wobble in the shaft, hard problem to figure out. Have a great day. Gene

I think you mean not reaching full advance until near or after redline ! That is fixed by changing the springs on the weights, and that is why I bought the spring kit per Lars's recommendation. Hopefully I will have this all back together by Monday or Tuesday but the weather may be an issue for test driving, time is very limited to work on this due to other commitments!
