Default Weather strip removal question

I'm having my 77 painted so I'm removing all the weather stripping since it needs to be replaced anyway. So my question is this. The strip that is called the rear vertical strip, which is like right wear ur head is when ur sitting in the seat, I ripped off and there is a metal strip that is pop rivited on. Is the metal part of the weather strip so I can drill the rivits out and remove it, or should I leave it on and the new weather strip like attaches to it?

The rivets need to be drilled out from the inside to completely remove it. The new weatherstrip will have the metal inside of it. When installing you need to re-rivet it back on from the inside. My weatherstrip came with new rivets.

Do you have the assembly instruction manual (AIM)? You're going to want it after paint when it come times to install new weatherstripping.

leave the metal strip/guide/retainer in place. Paint the car then clean the area. Then the new weatherstrip can be installed.

My weatherstrip didn't have any metal in it, maybe that's why I can't get the back of the glass to seal there
