muncie input shaft movement
i'm rebuilding a m20. the input bearing is a "slide-in" fit. no latereral movement or run-out. with the snap ring on and the oil slinger in place, the shaft has about 1/8" front to back movement. also, if i pull the shaft forward that 1/8" the gear contacts the housing. is this normal, and does the front retainer hold the bearing and shaft in the rearward position so the snap ring contacts the housing?
btw, after fighting the reverse detent ball for a few minutes, i pulled out my blade screwdriver that i cut a notch into to install the parking brakes. put that sucker on that ball and had the reverse lever in place in seconds!

Is the mid plate seated all the way? Do you have the nut and bearing retainer installed? Im also rebuilding one now and have all the shaft, case, and tail all assembled and should finish it tonight. I held down the dent ball with a z shaped screw driver you get with a craftsman screwdriver set, worked like a charm.
