How Do I REMOVE My SB Crank Gear? Tool?
Thanks for all of your help identifying the tools for installing my crank gear on another thread. From that exchange, I've identified tools that:
But, none of them seem to ALSO pull the crank gear. I have a pitman arm 'jaw' puller for my '80 L48.
Will it pull my crank gear?
- Install Crank Gear on crankshaft
- Install/Remove damper on crankshaft

Either a 2 or a 3 jaw puller will work fine- just put something in the end of the crank so the pressure screw on the puller can't get deep enough into the taper to either get stuck or damage the threads.

Just did this for my roller cam swap.Remove gear with 2 jaw puller and an oversized washer over the crank snout ,as not to damage threads in crank.Installed gear by using a large diameter PVC pipe over the crank and tapping evenly on the pipe pressing the gear on the crank.Use a Harmonic Balancer installer tool,to press balancer on to crank. If you use the balancer bolt you risk the chance of pulling out the crank threads.

Easiest way I've found to get it off if you don't have a puller is turn the crank till the key is on top, get a chisel and place it between 2 sprocket teeth at the key way and give it a whack with a 2 lb hammer. The sprocket splits at the key way and you pull it off with your hand, takes about 30 seconds. Wont work with a quality sprocket, but works good on the stock type.

Thanks all! Sure thankful for all the great feedback. I now know what I need to do with the front of the engine (crank gear and the damper) for my cam swap.

When its time to install your new gear, some heat is your friend.Warm it up in the toaster oven, heat gun or even sit it on top of your trouble lamp bulb for a bit, then slide it on with a slight tap or two.
