Default Dipstick question

The dipstick tube on my 76 comes out when I pull out the dipstick. Is it supposed to be press fit into the block? Is there supposed to be an o ring to keep it from leaking? Any tips on fixing it?

No the holder should stay in place. It is a pressed fit but not that much of super pressed fit. When I changed mine to a chrome replacement I was able to just grab the holder and pull it right out. However the chrome one was a sloppy fit. To fix it I took a cotton swab with alchehol and cleaned the hole in block and used high temp sealant on the holder and put back in block. I let it set overnight and no problems, doesn't pull out or leak.

Try to gently expand (swedge) the end of the tube out with a tapered tool, like an alignment tool. But you need to only expand it slightly. Lou.

Is it common for the dipstick tube to leak? I have a mystery leak that could be coming from there.
