Woo hoo! 15 mpg!
When I got my '81 (with 383, big lopey cam, ported heads, Speed Demon 750, etc.) about 2 months ago, it was getting about 10 mpg in mixed driving (my 20 mile round trip work commute)and 11 mpg on a 150 mile highway run. I've since jetted the carb down for the high altitude, leaned out the idle mixture, added an electric choke (PO had taken off the choke completely) and hooked up the vac advance on the distributor (don't know why it was not hooked up before, the timing looks great with it hooked up and it idles/runs great).
Anyway, I just filled up again after 292.4 of commuting miles with 19.468 gallons, which is just over 15 mpg. That's better than I was hoping. I was just hoping to get it up over 13. Some of that may be due to the warmer weather, but to be honest, the weather here has been fairly warm here since I first got the Vette, so I wouldn't attribute more than 5-10% to that.
It may not seem that huge a jump, but going from 10 to 15 is a 50% improvement...going 300 miles on 20 gallons instead of 200. Speaking of which, I think the tank size on the 81 Vettes was 26.0 gallons. Can anyone verify that for me?
