C3 street strip exhaust (pics)
Just fabbed this up for my '78. I didnt like the fumes from the sidepipes and I couldnt run a "full" exhaust because I have a solid axle conversion so I made this up. The cats can unbolt and be replaced by a straight pipe for track days. Still have finish welding to do and little more floorpan clearancing.

Pretty clever and nice work.
One question though -
don't you worry about carbon monoxide leaking into cabin with the tailpipes ending before the rear axle?
Btw - what straight axle rear end is that?

That looks pretty darned clean and I'll bet it breathes! I'm curious too regarding what Bman asked- IIRC in CA the exhaust can't end until it reaches past the rear axle. I can't tell from the pics exactly where yours ends but it looks close.

Ive had a similar set up on my old car at it wasnt that loud-those mufflers meet Englishtowns strict noise requirements and they exit past the the rear of the door which is required by the NHRA.
The sidepipes I had before were awful as far as carbon monixide and they spewed out sideways and the fumes came right up to the window. Least now I have the cats under there. I will look over everything to make sure no extra holes under there for sure. This is a typical drag racing set up where it dumps before the rear.
The rear is a Strange 9" and its held on by the Autofab 4 link.

I am going back and forth on whether to go sidepipes or full exhaust on my project.
Funny thing is back in 1970 I had a 67 Camaro with headers that only had the thrush muffler bolt-on setup. It ended under the back seat.
Back then we did not worry so much about CO - lol.
I used to run that at Englishtown also.
Have fun with your setup.

Looks good. Did you notice any diff in power when switching from sidepipes to those? i've heard that sbc hooker headers and sidepipes don't really flow too great. I've thought of swapping my sidepipes for a similar set up as yours but with 3" flowmaster outlaw bullets or dynomax race bullets.

Those are 1 3/4" Hooker Supercomps. 3" collector.
This is a STREET car that I will RACE. No trailor and I will remove the cats and put in straight pipe on raceday. Thats why I put the cats on it. Wanna be green
The Hooker side mount headers and pipes really arent great for performance. Primaries little too large for most sbc set ups and primaries also wayyyyyyy too long-4" collector way too big-kills low end torque I havent run with this new exhaust yet I still have to finish weld and re install.

The mufflers I chose are pretty good noisewise (I've used them before) and if you were to look inside them you would probably choose them over any bullet muffler because they are a straight through design-with just a perforated divider down the middle. You could see right out the other side and they sound great. I'll put up a sound vid when I get them back in if you're interested.

That's
I have similar setup that I designed from the beginning. I can take the whole muffler system off which makes it a straight header configuration and I have turn-downs, the whole process take about 10 minutes to disconnect at the track. And lose about 40lbs. I have 2 cats on the removable pipes now too. Don't have a pic of the turndowns but you can see in the last pic they bolt right up.

To follow up on bmans comments, on the street your exhaust would be illegal here in Ohio......because of the fumes exhaust cannot terminate under the car; it must go all the way out the back or exit out the side.

probably wouldn't be too much trouble to take off those turndowns and make pipe to exit out the sides in front of the rear tire. Something to think about.
