Default Chevy Brand Aluminum intake?

Did Chevy make an aluminum intake manifold for the early C3? 68-72 that clears the stock small block hood?

I found this on Ebay but it says LT1 so not sure it will clear the hood. Anyone?

My '73 has a Holley 300-36 which is supposedly a clone of the LT1 intake. It's a pretty tall intake. I'm running a Holley Street Avenger carb with a 1.5" drop base air cleaner with 3" element and my air cleaner lid (billet, flat and 1/4" thick) just barely hits the inner portion of the hood in one spot near the edge of the lid. I really need to gain 1/8" to clear best. I have about 1/4" of clearance in the middle of the lid which has a nut that rises about 3/8" above the lid.

If I had an air cleaner lid that was thin at the edges but didn't rise more than 1/2" or so from the edge to the center, I would be in better shape. I'd love to have a big block hood.

Previous owner ran a 1.25" drop base with a 2" element but there had to be a very thick gasket on top of the carb to get the lid to clear the choke plate. I had about 3/4" of clearance all around with that setup but my current air cleaner flows much better.

All that said, remember that my '73 hood originally had a cowl induction setup and so may have different clearances than your hood.

That tells me it probably won't clear a stock 71 hood. Looks like the Edelbrock Performer will end up being the solution.

Good choice. LT-1 C3's were a little unique in several ways. The hood was one.

Default Intake

I had that intake on my 69 350/350 and it did work with the stock hood, but just barely. You could see where the carb wingnut had scratched the inside finish of the hood. I was running a 670 CFM Holley Street Avenger on it with what I believe to be a stock LT-1 air cleaner.

Interesting. I don't want to push it with hood clearance so i may have to go with the Performer. It would be cool to have a Chevy intake however.

Frankly, that would be my recommendation. It did look really cool with the repro LT-1 fuel line but the hood clearance (or lack of) always made me nervous.

Here are a couple of photos of Chevrolet's BowTie LT1 intake on my '69. Holley DP, stock air filter housing and filter element. It fits under the stock small block hood. It was a long time ago, so I forget the exact clearances, but I think I have about half inch clearance at the closest point between the hood and fir filter, measured with play dough. What I do not have is the half inch or so heat insulator that LT1s had under the carb.

Look closely under the rad hose and you can see the Winters Foundry snowflake.

And with the air filter installed:

I really like keeping my Corvette All Chevrolet.

That's really why mine is so close. I'm running the Holley aluminum heat shield with thin gasket plus a heat insulator spacer of about 5/16". If I could find a slightly thinner spacer, I could gain the 1/8" that would make me feel better about my installation.

Pretty cool. All Chevy was what i was thinking. I wonder how that intake or the one on Ebay would fit with a quadrate? Got a link to that LT1 intake? Btw those center screw valve covers look pretty good.

When I installed the ZZ4 in my '69 with the stock 3" tall air filter, I could see the small circular mark on the inside of the hood indicating the air cleaner was hitting. I just bought Puro # A60102 which is 2.5" high. It appears to now give me the clearance I need. The ZZ4 alum. intake is a medium rise as opposed to the low rise I had on my oem 350/300. I'm running the stock Q-jet with internal mods.

Photo is the 3" tall air filter

The "new" 2 1/2" filter

Unless you measure it, or know it ahead of time, you never notice the 1/2" difference of the #A60102.

If you a using a q-jet carb, why not use an aluminum L-82 Intake? You can pick them up really cheap and they are just as good as a performer intake

Look for an L-82 intake. Some of them are aluminum and will clear the small block hood.

In the end i'll probably just use the Edelbrock performer. I'll be using after market aluminum heads anyway. Dart or maybe AFR.

If it gets tight between the hood and the air cleaner, the stock L88 and LT-1 air cleaner base is probably the lowest available on the market.
If it get to tight on your carb you may have to mill away the choke tower to allow for proper airflow to the primary's.

Wing nut? Chose a proper length (cut if you have to) countersunk allen key (hex inside) bolt.

I did both on my engine and it works fine with the air cleaner lid touching the vent-pipes.

I assume this is with the LT-1 intake?

No I run a bigblock with a LS6 intake, my post was just to clarify that there are some ways to get around some minor clearance issues.

Ah ok. Well i'm dealing with a stock small block hood so that LT1 intake probably isn't going to work for me.

I used manifold #3917610 on my 350, no clearance problems. This was stock for 69 z28.
