Default 1978 steering wheel snap ring help

I am having trouble replacing the snap ring on the locking plate after I replaced my turn signal switch. Suggestions?

Do you have a plate depressor tool? that is the easiest way that I know to reinstall the snap ring. Just depress the plate and slide the ring over the shaft until it snaps in place.

No. I thought there might be a tool. I did not know what or where to get one. It's not easy trying to push the locking plate in by hand.

You can borrow the tool from Auto Zone or O'Rilley's. Makes it lots easier.

In order to use the special tool (I call it a lock plate compressor) you also need to lock the upper steering shaft from telescoping. Usually tightening the star screw locks the upper and yoke shafts from telescoping.

However, the special tool usually interferes with the star screw. So you want a small set screw with a 5/16-18 UNC thread or a #20 Allen screw to replace the star screw. Tighten the set screw and the two shafts won't telescope. Then the special tool will work correctly.

Default Diy

The compressor tool is the right way to do it. My local Auto Zone doesn't carry it. On my column there is an empty ~1/2" hole at the 2 o'clock position. I was able to use a screwdriver through this hole to compress the spring enough to get the clip on.

Thanks that worked great. The information about locking the shaft with Allen screw was key. Everything is back together and back on the road!
