If it's not one thing it's another...
Two weeks ago I installed a Breakerless SE kit. Can ran fine till it got hot then started breaking up. Back & forth to points & got that sorted out & working well. Went for a 40 mile test drive on the 4th with no problems. After the car cooled off I took out the coil - Accel 8140 - and painted it black to match the rest of the engine compartment.
Put it back together Fri am started the car backed it of of the garage to do some work. Went to start the car later to run some errands & the car wouldn't start, cranked over fine but would not fire. That's when I saw the smoke from the back edge of the hood.
It appears to have short between the starter & coil. I've so far unwrapped the harness between the starter & coil & have found no shorts nor bare wires.
I have a Powermaster 9612 gear reduction starter with their R terminal diode kit. I had .5 volts at the coil with the diode connected & now have 12.47 volts with it off.

Could the diode have gone bad? Any other suggestions? Gonna try it with out the R terminal diode connected & see what happens.
Thanks
Jim

Have a call into Powermasters tech support as the starter has been in for less than a month
Thanks
