Default U-joint inspection

I've serched u-joints and can't find my problem.

coming home the other day , several times I heard what sounded like a rear tire rubbing, but it goes away once you get going.

I checked all the rubber mounts, engine, trans ,rear.

also added the posi lube which got rid of my thumping noise.

so I am checking the U-joints.
everything seems tight when I rotate back and forth.
but at the wheel end , with the wheel half of the joint up and down I can feel a very little play, not enough the see but I can feel it. doesn't do it with shaft side of the U-joint up and down.

also the yoke at the trans actually has some play between it and the trans,

car is on jack stands at the shock mounts and trans in neutral.

Half shafts, Mine did the same thing. Drove me crazy. I found the outter u-joints were lock-up. That tire rubbing sound! Man I looked for days and a 100 miles trying to find it. Pull your half shafts and check'em out. Thats where mine was.

ok. so I was bleeding the brakes while I had it up on stands and tires off.
tried to spin the rotor when I noticed it will spin about a 1/4 and binds up, if I put a bar in the studs and turn it , you can see the trailing arm move up about 1/2 inch.

is this the u-joint binding up.???

Look for rust colored dust at the u-joint bearing cups. This is an indication of worn out needle bearings in the joints. mike...

The u-joints are binding up. You can't turn the half shafts when the suspension is hanging down.

car is sitting on jack stands at the shock mount, susp is loaded.

under side of car is greasy dirty from an oil leak. can't see any rust due to the oil every where

odd thing is the inner joints look new, why wouldn't you replace both while you got it apart ????

Be sure to put the stands under the frame before you disconnect the half shaft.

I will do that for the extra room , but doesn't the trailing arm shock and spring hold up the rear , not the half shafts ?

Default Replace them....

I purchased two rebuilt/refurbished units from Blair at $100 ea. If you are going to remove the half shafts, then just replace the U-Joints. The Blair units just made life easy for me.
I also followed this how-to link;

ok thanks!,
I looked through their R and R page. looks easy enough to pop out the u-joints and put the new ones in. no different then any other drive shaft.

Except that, if you're not careful, you can bend the yoke flange that bolts to the spindle.

The half shaft holds the wheel straight up and down. The car could shift and besides the jack stand there will make it difficult to twist the trailing arm when removing and replacing the shaft.
